White piedra is a fungal infection of the hair shaft caused by Trichosporon beigelii. A synergistic coryneform bacterial infection is often present with T beigelii. White piedra, although not commonly reported to infect scalp hair in North America, is an important consideration in the differential diagnosis of scalp hair concretions. We report a case of white piedra of scalp hair with synergistic coryneform bacterial infection in two sisters, both US natives. Culture and light and electronmicroscopic evidence of the synergistic infection are presented.

Brain Metastasis in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Breast J

January 2025

Escuela Profesional de Medicina Humana Universidad Privada San Juan Bautista, Chorrillos, Lima, Peru.

Background: Breast cancer is an important cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide and represents the second most frequent cause of brain metastases after lung cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics and outcomes of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients with brain metastasis (BM).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed a cohort of patients diagnosed with TNBC at the "Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas" (period 2000-2014) to evaluate patients who developed BM.

Introduction: Pembrolizumab stands as a first-line option for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and high programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression (PD-L1 ≥50%). Several factors such as antibiotic exposure, low body mass index (BMI), certain metastatic location or poor performance status may influence outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective analysis in a cohort of patients with advanced high PD-L1 expression NSCLC treated with first-line pembrolizumab in clinical practice.

Two-flap earlobe rotation for extensive mid-helix defect: a case report of a new modification to an existing technique.

J Surg Case Rep

December 2024

Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Escolar 411A, Copilco Universidad, Coyoacan, 04360, Mexico City, Mexico.

Reconstructing ear defects in very elderly patients is challenging, but one-step procedures are beneficial due to reduced morbidity and fewer hospital visits while maintaining ear size, shape, and symmetry. In 2018, Jaber . introduced a 90° earlobe rotation technique to repair full-thickness auricular defects while preserving the earlobe.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Disease Burden and Nirsevimab Effectiveness in Young Children From 2023-2024.

JAMA Pediatr

December 2024

Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia.

Importance: During the 2023-2024 respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season in the United States, 2 new RSV prevention products were recommended to protect infants in their first RSV season: nirsevimab and Pfizer's maternal RSV vaccine. Postlicensure studies are needed to assess prevention product impact and effectiveness.

Objective: To compare the epidemiology and disease burden of medically attended RSV-associated acute respiratory illness (ARI) among children younger than 5 years during the 2023-2024 RSV season with 3 prepandemic RSV seasons (2017-2020), estimate nirsevimab effectiveness against medically attended RSV-associated ARI, and compare nirsevimab binding site mutations among circulating RSV in infants with and without nirsevimab receipt.

ST8-t008-SCC IV methicillin-resistant in retail fresh cheese.

JDS Commun

November 2024

Facultad de Microbiología, Universidad de Costa Rica, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, 11501-2060 San José, Costa Rica.

This study reports the finding of 3 ST8-t008-SCC IVa (2B) methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains in fresh cheese purchased within a single market in Costa Rica. In line with the finding of the resistance genes , , (C), and (A) in their genomes, these bacteria showed phenotypic resistance to multiple β-lactams and erythromycin. In addition, they carry genes for acquired resistance to aminoglycosides () and fosfomycin (), and genes for a myriad of virulence factors, including adhesins, hemolysins, and exotoxins.
