We studied the adhesion and proliferation of human umbilical-vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and human aortic smooth-muscle cells (HASMC) on modified polymer samples. The polymers under investigation were either PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or PET [poly(ethylene terephthalate)], which are among the most frequently employed biomaterials in reconstructive medicine. The polymer surfaces were modified by exposure to the UV light of an excited-xenon-dimer (Xe2*) Excimer lamp (Heraeus-Noblelight, Hanau, Germany) at a wavelength of 172 nm in an NH3 atmosphere. On modified PTFE, this resulted in a significant increase in the number of adhering HUVEC or HASMC 1 day after seeding and in the formation of a confluent cell layer after 3-4 days. On PET, HUVEC adhesion and proliferation rates were already high on untreated samples and could not be significantly increased by the UV-light treatment, but the cells were distributed more homogenously on the treated samples. Cell proliferation was in all cases comparable with, or even better than, that obtained on standard polystyrene (PS) Petri dishes used in cell cultivation. As on PS Petri dishes, the proliferation of HASMC on modified PTFE was faster than that of HUVEC under similar culture conditions.

Background/purpose: Titanium dioxide nanotube (TNT) structures have been shown to enhance the early osseointegration of dental implants. Nevertheless, the optimal nanotube diameter for promoting osteogenesis remains unclear due to variations in cell types and manufacture of nanotubes. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in MC3T3-E1 and Saos-2 cells behavior on nanotubes of varying diameters.

Liver cancer is prevalent with the third highest mortality rate globally. The biomechanical properties of cancer cells play a crucial role in their proliferation and differentiation. Studying the morphological and mechanical properties of individual living cells can be helpful for early diagnosis of cancers.

Extracellular matrix (ECM)-based small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs, inner diameter (ID) < 6 mm) hold great promise for clinical applications. However, existing ECM-based SDVGs suffer from limited donor availability, complex purification, high cost, and insufficient mechanical properties. SDVGs with ECM-like structure and function, and good mechanical properties were rapidly prepared by optimizing common materials and preparation, which can improve their clinical prospects.

Based on the focal adhesion kinase(FAK)/steroid receptor coactivator(Src)/extracellular regulated protein kinase(ERK) pathway, this study explored the effects of Xihuang Pills on angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis in prostate cancer. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS) was used to analyze and identify the active ingredients of Xihuang Pills. Bioinformatics techniques, including R language and Perl programs, were employed to analyze the interactions between prostate cancer-related targets and the potential targets of Xihuang Pills.

This study explores the use of chicken egg white (EW), a rich source of natural proteins, to address challenges in wound healing management. Herein, a novel Zn-infused EW/GelMA (EW/Gel) hybrid hydrogel is developed, featuring an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure, where the first network consists of photo-cross-linked GelMA and the second network consists of Zn-infused EW (Zn-EW) through ion-protein binding. By optimizing the design and formulation, the resulting Zn-EW/Gel hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical stability and self-adhesive properties.
