Recent high-throughput methods for the analysis of biological samples are raising the possibility of data integration between investigators and even across technology platforms. In plant biology, integration of data can be problematic, since heterogeneity of plant growth conditions and phenotypes result in data sets that are not consistent or easily comparable. In this chapter, we describe the development of a plant phenotyping platform based on a growth stage scale that will aid in the generation of coherent data. While the emphasis is on the development of a phenotyping platform for Arabidopsis, the aim of this chapter is to describe principles that can be applied to other plant systems as well. Additionally, we discuss approaches for data analysis and quality control.

This chapter offers an overview of the literature on human handedness and its assessment in clinical neurologic practice and research. There are two major forms of handedness: hand preference, which describes a subjective preference to use one hand over the other for skilled motor activities like writing, and hand skill, which describes objectively measured mother skill. This chapter gives an overview of widely used questionnaires and tests to assess hand preference and hand skill, as well as suggestions on how to determine handedness categories such as left-handed, right-handed, and mixed-handed based on the results of these questionnaires and tests.

The chapter explores the difference between the cerebral hemispheres in the three categories of attention described in the fundamental classification of Posner and Petersen: Alerting, Orienting, and Executive Functions. The first section is concerned with the brain localization of visuospatial attention as studied in brain-damaged patients, mainly hemineglect and callosum-sectioned patients. Other important results have been provided more recently by means of brain imaging studies of cortical and subcortical attention networks.

RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) has become the gold standard for transcriptome analysis, making gene expression quantification the core application in molecular biology research. For well-annotated genomes, the standard RNA-Seq workflow relies on a reference genome-based approach. However, RNA-Seq analysis presents different challenges, including complex computational pipelines, the need for bioinformatics skills, and significant computational requirements.

Isolation of neural stem cells/neural progenitor cells (NSC/NPC) from extra-neural origin, or adult stem cells able to specify into NSC/NPC in vitro under particular cell culture conditions, offers an interesting alternative experimental model with prospective benefits in basic research and translational medicine. In this chapter, we describe a procedure of isolation and culture of ovarian cortical cells that consistently allows the spontaneous generation of a large number of neurospheres (NS), and the methods to demonstrate that their integrating NSC/NPC self-renew and are able to differentiate into neurons and glia, during the NS assay.
