Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how intercellular calcium waves in Drosophila adipose tissues contribute to regulating multicellular responses, focusing on their dynamic behavior.
  • Adipokinetic Hormone (AKH), similar to glucagon in humans, is identified as the main driver of calcium activities in the larval fat tissue, promoting lipolysis through a novel mechanism that doesn’t involve gap junctions.
  • The research also finds that dietary amino acids can stimulate the release of AKH, which then enhances intracellular calcium levels and boosts lipid metabolism in adipose tissue.

Adipokinetic hormone (AKH), a crucial neuropeptide, participates in the important physiological processes by specially binding to its receptor to activate the AKH signalling pathway. AKH regulates energy metabolism. However, it remains unknown whether AKH affects larval development and adult reproduction by influencing energy metabolism.

As a typical G protein-coupled receptor, the adipokinetic hormone receptor (AKHR) has seven transmembrane domains (TMDs), and its structure and function are similar to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) in vertebrates. However, there is a dearth of information on other components of the AKHR signaling pathway and how it functions in the interaction between insect hosts and parasitoids. In this study, we cloned and analyzed the multifunctional Ostrinia furnacalis AKHR (OfAKHR) cDNA (GenBank accession number MF797868).

Modulation of response to braconid wasp venom by adipokinetic hormone in Drosophila melanogaster.

Institute of Entomology, Biology Centre, CAS, Branišovská 31, 370 05 České Budějovice, Czech Republic; Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, Branišovská 31, 370 05 České Budějovice, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

The minute wasp Habrobracon hebetor venom (HH venom) is a potent cocktail of toxins that paralyzes the victim's muscles and suppresses humoral and cellular immunity. This study examined the effect of HH venom on specific biochemical, physiological, and ultrastructural characteristics of the thoracic and nervous (CNS) tissues of Drosophila melanogaster under in vitro conditions. Venom treatment modulated the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), endogenous Drome-AKH level, and affected the relative viability of the cells.
