Background: Tar is the main toxic of cigarettes, and its effect on atherosclerosis progression and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a key role in atherogenesis and plaque vulnerability. The present study sought to investigate the mechanism of atherosclerosis progression through tar-induced VSMC necroptosis, a recently described form of necrosis.

Despite the known promotional effects of cigarette smoking on progression of atherosclerosis (AS), tar as the most dominant toxic component in cigarette smoking has been little studied. Understanding the potential role and mechanisms of tar in AS may be a prerequisite for future reductions in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Male ApoE mice were fed with high-fat diet and injected intraperitoneally with cigarette tar (40 mg/kg/day) for 16 weeks.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tobacco tar are regarded as a significant threat to human health. PAHs are formed due to the incomplete combustion of organics in tobacco and cigarette paper. Herein, for the first time, we extended the application of CsPbBr quantum dots (CsPbBr) to the photocatalytic degradation of tobacco tar, which was collected from used cigarette filters.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major reason of cerebrovascular and neurological damage. Premorbid conditions such as tobacco smoking (TS) can worsen post-TBI injuries by promoting vascular endothelial impairments. Indeed, TS-induced oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation can hamper the blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelium.

Developing a rapid, simple, and sensitive method to analyze drugs is critical to forensic research study because of the widespread occurrence of the matrix effect. Herein, we develop a method using thermal-assisted carbon fiber ionization mass spectrometry that can be used to directly analyze drugs in biological fluid. The key feature of this technique is that the biological samples such as urine and blood can be achieved online as precipitated protein on the carbon fiber tip and thermally desorbed by the metal ceramics heater, which can reduce the matrix effects and improve the sensitivity.
