Introduction: Sex hormones deficiency--hypotestosteronemia (20-30% of men) and dehydroepian-drosterone sulfate deficiency (60-70% of men) are often observed in elderly men. In these men also changes of body composition (visceral obesity, increasing of fat mass), and metabolic disturbances (hypercholesterolemia, hyperinsulinism and insulin resistance) are common disorders. Visceral obesity and insulin resistance may be either reasons or effects of testosterone deficiency.

Three studies examined the effects of early postnatal treatment with a GnRH agonist on plasma concentrations of testosterone, dehydroepian-drosterone sulfate, 16-androstene steroids in fat and salivary glands, androstenone in fat and plasma, and testicular development of intact male pigs. The first study involved 45 7-d-old pigs assigned to three treatment groups: 1) boars administered 100 microg/kg of Lupron depot, 2) boars administered 200 microg/kg of Lupron depot, and 3) control boars receiving a saline carrier. The second study involved 20 7-d-old pigs assigned to two treatments: daily injection of 200 microL of 0.

Background: Haemostasis plays a major part in the process initiating a myocardial infarction. The impact of haemostatic variables on long term prognosis is unknown.
Objective: To evaluate von Willebrand factor (vWF), tissue plasminogen activator antigen (t-PA) and its activity before and after venous occlusion, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), dehydroepian-drosterone sulphate (DHEAS), and established clinical risk factors as long term predictors for reinfarction and mortality.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether preterm parturition is associated with changes in maternal plasma and amniotic fluid dehydroepian-drosterone-sulfate concentrations. A cross sectional study was constructed according to the gestational age at admission and response to tocolysis. Group 1 consisted of women admitted with preterm labor and intact membranes between 28 and 31 weeks and 6 days gestational age (n = 40).

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AS) have recently been placed on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) list of controlled substances, because of the adverse effects seen in athletes taking accelerated dosages in attempts to enhance performance. Reported deleterious effects on abusers include sterility, gynecomastia in males, acne, balding, psychological changes, and increased risks of heart disease and liver neoplasia. Considering the roles of the immune and neuroendocrine systems and their interactions in many of these pathologies, it is important to determine the effects of these derivitized androgens on this connection.
