More than 500 centres in China hold over 300,000 individuals in what has been described by the United Nations as unethical and ineffective compulsory treatment and rehabilitation centres. Individuals in these centres face widespread human rights abuses, including lack of due process, forced labour, physical and sexual violence, and denial of healthcare. Because of the vulnerability of individuals in detention settings to abuse in research trials, ethical guidelines have required research to pose no more than minimal risk, to address the process of incarceration, and the health or well-being of detained individuals.

Chronic physical conditions (CPC) and alcohol and substance use disorders (SUD) frequently co-occur, but this has not been examined perinatally. We explored the combined effects of CPC and prepregnancy SUD on perinatal SUD-related adverse events and outpatient care. This population-based study comprised 77,474 people with and 664,751 without CPC with a birth in Ontario, Canada, 2013-2020.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hypertriglyceridemia, and acute pancreatitis are a rare and potentially fatal triad. This article presents a fatal case of acute pancreatitis, DKA, and hypertriglyceridemia in a patient with undiagnosed diabetes mellitus struggling with alcoholism. The patient was unresponsive to standard pancreatitis and DKA treatment protocol and progressed to develop multi-organ failure.
