Mucus secretion and its composition are vital in the maintenance of airway health, among which hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are thought to be involved in the regulation of mucin synthesis and regulation. Nasal mucus composition difference between healthy individuals and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients may contribute to the pathology of chronic nasal diseases, but so far, their role has yet to be completely understood. Nasal biopsy specimens were obtained from 24 healthy subjects and 99 patients with CRS without (CRSsNP, n=36) or with (CRSwNP, n=63) nasal polyps.

Macrolides are one of the most widely used antibiotics, but the mechanisms underlying macrolide allergy have not been clearly elucidated. Diffuse maculopapular exanthema caused by clarithromycin is extremely rare, of which clinical images have not been reported. Here, we report a case of a 55-year-old Japanese female who was treated with oral clarithromycin and lysozyme hydrochloride due to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis.

Flavones are a class of natural plant secondary metabolites that have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. Some flavones also activate the T2R14 bitter taste receptor, which is expressed in motile cilia of the sinonasal epithelium and activates innate immune nitric oxide (NO) production. Flavones may thus be potential therapeutics for respiratory infections.

Both maxillary sinusitis (MS) and maxillary retention cyst (MRC) involve the maxillary sinus and show similar clinical features. Clinically, differentiating between MS and MRC is sometimes difficult in asymptomatic patients, despite their quite different pathogenic behaviors. To identify differential protein expressions in the secretory fluids of MS and MRC, 25 cases of asymptomatic MS and 15 cases of asymptomatic MRC were examined pathologically in this study.
