Objective: We present a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the abdominal wall treated laparoscopically.
Method: We will discuss the clinicopathologic characteristics and will present a review of the literature.
Results: SFTs are rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin.

Solitary Fibrous Tumors (SFTs) are uncommon mesenchymal tumors of fibroblastic/myofibroblastic origin that stem from various anatomical sites. Most SFTs are asymptomatic and noticed incidentally by various imaging modalities. Although SFTs were initially identified in the pleura and erroneously considered to originate solely from serosal layers, extrapleural SFTs have been reported more commonly than their pleural counterparts.

The presentation of the Mesothelioma and Radical Surgery 2 trial, a randomized controlled trial comparing pleurectomy/decortication to no surgery, injected new data into the contentious discussion surrounding the use of surgery in the management of diffuse pleural mesothelioma. We review the trial results in the context of the existing work surrounding the use of surgery in pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease with an historically poor prognosis. Over the past decade, a grading system has been developed that is a powerful prognostic tool in epithelioid mesothelioma. Grading of epithelioid mesothelioma is now required or strongly recommended by expert consensus, the College of American Pathologists, the World Health Organization, and the International Mesothelioma Interest Group.
