Post-temporary ligation intraoperative mesenteric portovenography: comparison with CT angiography for investigation of portosystemic shunts.

J Small Anim Pract

February 2018

School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham, Sutton Bonington Campus, Leicestershire, LE12 5RD, UK.

Objectives: Comparison of pre-operative CT angiography and post-temporary, full-ligation, intraoperative, mesenteric portovenography for the characterisation of intrahepatic portal vasculature in patients with single extrahepatic portosystemic shunts.

Methods: Descriptive analysis of previously collected images from 14 dogs and five cats.

Results: With the exception of shunts involving the right gastric vein, intrahepatic arborisation appeared similar on both modalities.

Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt Creation With Embolization or Obliteration for Variceal Bleeding.

Tech Vasc Interv Radiol

March 2016

(a)Division of Interventional Radiology, Department of Radiology, University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, Chicago, IL. Electronic address:

Variceal hemorrhage is a life-threatening sequela of liver cirrhosis that requires a careful and comprehensive approach to management. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt creation with or without variceal embolization or obliteration represents a minimally invasive image-guided intervention used for the management of varices. This review focuses on the role of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt and embolization or obliteration in the setting of variceal hemorrhage, with an emphasis on the useful aspects of patient evaluation and selection, practical approaches to procedure planning and valuable elements of interventional technique, and clinical outcomes as they pertain to portal venous decompression and variceal embolotherapy.

Guide for diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

World J Hepatol

June 2015

Magdy Hamed Attwa, Shahira Aly El-Etreby, Division of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Specialized Medical Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Mansoura 35516, Egypt.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is ranked as the 5(th) common type of cancer worldwide and is considered as the 3(rd) common reason for cancer-related deaths. HCC often occurs on top of a cirrhotic liver. The prognosis is determined by several factors; tumour extension, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentration, histologic subtype of the tumour, degree of liver dysfunction, and the patient's performance status.

Purpose: To compare and evaluate images of non-contrast enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) portography and hepatic venography acquired with two different fat suppression methods, the chemical shift selective (CHESS) method and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) method.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-two healthy volunteers were examined using respiratory-triggered three-dimensional true steady-state free-precession with two time-spatial labeling inversion pulses. The CHESS or STIR methods were used for fat suppression.

Portal vein aneurysms (PVA) are a rare vascular anomaly of the portal system, representing fewer than 3% of all venous aneurysms, with only 150 known cases since first reported in l956 by Barzilai and Kleckner. PVA can be divided into 2 categories: extrahepatic and intrahepatic with acquired and congenital etiologies. Bimodal treatment includes medical and surgical approaches.
