Mitochondria from harbor a branched electron-transport chain containing a proton-pumping Complex I NADH dehydrogenase and three Type II NADH dehydrogenases (NDH-2). To investigate the physiological role, localization and substrate specificity of these enzymes, the growth of various NADH dehydrogenase knockout mutants was quantitatively characterized in shake-flask and chemostat cultures, followed by oxygen-uptake experiments with isolated mitochondria. NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreduction of the three NDH-2 were individually assessed.

Metabolically active cells emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be used in real time to non-invasively monitor the health of cell cultures. We utilized these naturally occurring VOCs in an adapted culture method to detect differences in culturing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with and without Staphylococcus epidermidis and Aspergillus fumigatus contaminations. The VOC emissions from the cell cultures were extracted and measured from the culture flask headspace using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated Twisters, which were subjected to thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) analysis.

Electrochemical and shake flask tests were used to examine the corrosion characteristics of typical gangue minerals in biometallurgical systems and their impact on microbial communities. The results show that the solubility order of the three gangue minerals is feldspar, mica, and quartz in descending order. Their corrosion processes are mainly controlled by cathodic electron-donating processes.

In this work, a switchable synthesis of β-ketosulfone and α-chloroketone through a radical difunctionalization of alkenes is reported. The transformation works well under iron peroxo species/photoredox dual catalysis and an open-flask atmosphere, and the reaction is highlighted with good yields and a broad reaction scope. Mechanism studies show that the reaction is initiated by a formal [4 + 2] cyclization of the sulfonyl radical in a regioselective manner.

Enhancing the protein content and production efficiency of is crucial as an alternative protein source. This study screened nongenetically modified yeast strains with high protein content for food ingredient production and explored the underlying mechanisms. Yeast protein levels were found to correlate with RNA, leading to a high-throughput screening method using RNA fluorescence and flow cytometry.
