Background: Hypocholesterolemia hallmarks critical illness though the underlying pathophysiology is incompletely understood. As low circulating cholesterol levels could partly be due to an increased conversion to cortisol/corticosterone, we hypothesized that glucocorticoid treatment, via reduced de novo adrenal cortisol/corticosterone synthesis, might improve cholesterol availability and as such affect adrenal gland and skeletal muscle function.
Methods: In a matched set of prolonged critically ill patients (n = 324) included in the EPaNIC RCT, a secondary analysis was performed to assess the association between glucocorticoid treatment and plasma cholesterol from ICU admission to day five.

Adrenal glands, vital for steroid secretion and the regulation of metabolism, stress responses and immune activation, experience age-related decline, impacting systemic health. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying adrenal aging remain largely uninvestigated. Here we established a single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of both young and aged primate suprarenal glands, identifying lipid metabolism and steroidogenic pathways as core processes impacted by aging.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of administration of overnight 1 mg dexamethasone on vascular function in patients with nonfunctioning adrenal adenomas (NFA). Flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and nitroglycerine-induced vasodilation (NID) were measured to assess vascular function in 22 patients with NFA who had hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus (DM) and 272 patients without adrenal incidentalomas who had hypertension and/or DM (control patients with hypertension and/or DM). FMD and NID were measured in the morning before and after administration of 1 mg of dexamethasone at 2300 h in 18 patients with NFA.

Urotensin 2 (Uts2) is a biologically active peptide involved in the regulation of a variety of physiological and pathophysiological processes. In both the human and rat adrenal gland, the expressions of the Uts2 gene and its receptor (Uts2r) have been described. This paper focuses on the description of the hormonal control of the mRNA levels of urotensin II and its receptor in the adrenal gland of the rat, both in vitro and in vivo.

A 12-year-old neutered male Chihuahua dog was diagnosed with pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism and treated with trilostane. Eighty-nine days later, the dog showed lethargy accompanied by hyponatraemia and hyperkalaemia. Hypoadrenocorticism due to trilostane was suspected, but the result of the adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test was not conclusive.
