From fatty liver to fibrosis: the impact of miRNAs on NAFLD and NASH.

Funct Integr Genomics

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Badr University in Cairo (BUC), Badr City, 11829, Cairo, Egypt.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a disease with various levels varying from fatty liver steatosis to acute steatosis which is non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can develop into hepatic failure, as well as in some conditions it can develop into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the NAFLD and NASH context, aberrant microRNA (miRNA) expression has a thorough contribution to the incidence and development of these liver disorders by influencing key biological actions, involving lipid metabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis. Dysregulated miRNAs can disrupt the balance between lipid accumulation and clearance, exacerbate inflammatory responses, and promote fibrogenesis, thus advancing the severeness of the disorder from simple steatosis to more complex NASH.

Leukemia is one of the most common cancers in prepubertal girls and adolescents, with advances improving survival rates. However, treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are highly gonadotoxic, often causing ovarian insufficiency, early menopause, infertility, and endocrine disorders. Fertility preservation for young female cancer patients, especially prepubertal girls without mature germ cells, relies heavily on ovarian tissue cryopreservation.

Acute and chronic cannabis vapor exposure produces immediate and delayed impacts on phases of fear learning in a sex specific manner.

Psychopharmacology (Berl)

January 2025

Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada.

Rationale: Current treatment options for PTSD have unreliable efficacy, with many individuals unable to achieve complete remission. Cannabis and cannabinoids that act through the endogenous cannabinoid (endocannabinoid) system to help promote trauma recovery by means of enhanced extinction learning are potential therapeutic, pharmacological candidates. Using a preclinical model of translationally-relevant cannabis administration in rodents, we examined the impact of cannabis exposure on aversive memory.

Treatment of polycythemia vera (PV) aims to maintain hematocrit on target to reduce risk of thrombotic complications, while preventing disease progression to myelofibrosis (MF) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This analysis evaluated cost-effectiveness of adding ropeginterferon alfa-2b (ropegIFNα) to phlebotomy in patients with low-risk PV (those younger than 60 years without prior thrombosis), compared to phlebotomy alone. We combined a 12-month decision tree with a semi-Markov cohort model comparing ropegIFNα to the standard treatment from the Austrian healthcare system perspective over 30 years.

Background And Aims: There is a lack of research on the impact of acute stress on the interaction of affective and cognitive processes in online compulsive buying-shopping disorder (CBSD). Therefore, this project addressed stress response, cue reactivity, attentional bias, and implicit associations in individuals with online CBSD.

Methods: Women with CBSD (n = 63) and women with non-problematic online buying-shopping (n = 64) were randomly assigned to the Trier Social Stress Test or a non-stress condition.
