Colorectal cancer is influenced by genetic mutations, lifestyle factors, and diet, particularly high fat intake, which raises bile acid levels in the intestinal lumen. This study hypothesized that bile acids contribute to tumorigenesis by disrupting ion transport and ATPase activity in the intestinal mucosa. The effects of 3-sulfo-taurolithocholic acid (TLC-S) on ATPase activity were investigated in colorectal cancer samples from 10 patients, using adjacent healthy tissue as controls, and in rodent liver function.

Introduction: The contribution of Cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1) in mitochondrial energy transduction mechanisms and mitochondrial activities awaits deeper investigations. Our study aims to assess the impact of CB1 absence on the mitochondrial compartment in the liver, focusing on both functional aspects and remodeling processes.

Methods: We used CB1 and CB1 male mice.

Article Synopsis
  • The chapter discusses tumour hypoxia as a newly recognized hallmark of cancer, detailing its various classifications based on aetiology, exposure time, and intensity levels in tumours.
  • It highlights the dual role of hypoxia in cancer, where it can lead to tumour regression (through processes like apoptosis) or promote adaptive progression, suggesting a complex relationship with cancer development.
  • Key advancements in understanding hypoxia are attributed to techniques like polarographic pO microsensors for assessing oxygen levels and the discovery of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), which impact cancer progression on genetic and protein levels and hinder treatment effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondria play a crucial role in energy production, and recent findings link certain mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to the development of atherosclerosis, a chronic disease affecting arteries.
  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between oxygen consumption in cells and these atherosclerosis-related mtDNA mutations to better understand their role in disease progression.
  • Results showed that specific mtDNA mutations are associated with reduced cellular respiration, indicating they could potentially contribute to the mechanisms of atherosclerosis and suggest new targets for treatment.

In the late 1970s, sulfane sulfur was defined as sulfur atoms covalently bound only to sulfur atoms. However, this definition was not generally accepted, as it was slightly vague and difficult to comprehend. Thus, in the early 1990s, it was defined as "bound sulfur," which easily converts to hydrogen sulfide upon reduction with a thiol-reducing agent.
