Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation of human exposure to indoor Rn from building materials.

J Environ Radioact

The present study aimed to develop a Monte Carlo model to estimate the annual effective dose due to radon exposure sourced by radon gas in the walls and floor of a standard model room. With the purpose of developing a tool for radon level assessment in dwellings and workplaces, Geant4 toolkit was used to simulate the energy deposited by gamma rays emitted by radioactive radon progeny in a water phantom positioned at three different locations within the model room. The energy deposition was then used to estimate the annual effective dose through a deterministic approach.

This work aims to develop and validate a framework for the multiscale simulation of the biological response to ionizing radiation in a population of cells forming a tissue. We present TOPAS-Tissue, a framework to allow coupling two Monte Carlo (MC) codes: TOPAS with the TOPAS-nBio extension, capable of handling the track-structure simulation and subsequent chemistry, and CompuCell3D, an agent-based model simulator for biological and environmental behavior of a population of cells. We verified the implementation by simulating the experimental conditions for a clonogenic survival assay of a 2-D PC-3 cell culture model (10 cells in 10,000 µm) irradiated by MV X-rays at several absorbed dose values from 0-8 Gy.

Background: Maternal obesity prepregnancy, as well as gestational overweight produced by high-sucrose diet, could be evolved to the cardiometabolic diseases in offspring during adulthood. Until then, the cardiometabolic diseases were ignored that have been presented or inherited in the offspring for overnutrition were ignored, depend on gender. We proposed that maternal prepregnancy obesity in CD1 mice, as well as gestational overweight produced by a high sucrose diet, develop to cardiometabolic disease in offspring and even if gender.

From simulations and experimental data, the quality of cross progeny variance genomic predictions may be high, but depends on trait architecture and necessitates sufficient number of progenies. Genomic predictions are used to select genitors and crosses in plant breeding. The usefulness criterion (UC) is a cross-selection criterion that necessitates the estimation of parental mean (PM) and progeny standard deviation (SD).

Three methods of predicting the response to truncated selection based on BLUP of breeding values (BVs) were compared under conditions in which the phenotypic values for the progenies of selected animals were not available. The following methods were used to predict the response to selection: (1) based on the mean of estimated breeding values (EBV) in the candidate population for selection ( ), (2) based on the variance of EBV in the candidate population for selection ( ), and (3) based on diagonal elements of the inverse matrix on the left-hand side of the mixed model equation ( ). The deviation of the average BV of the selected animals from the average BV of the candidate population for selection was taken as the true response to selection.
