Hydroxysilylene (HSi-OH) in the gas phase.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Ideal Vacuum Products, LLC, 5910 Midway Park Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109, USA.

The hydroxysilylene (HSiOH) molecule has been spectroscopically identified in the gas phase for the first time. This highly reactive species was produced in a twin electric discharge jet using separate precursor streams of 16O2/18O2 and Si2H6/Si2D6, both diluted in high pressure argon. The strongest and most stable laser induced fluorescence (LIF) signals were obtained by applying an electric discharge to each of the precursor streams and then merging the discharge products just prior to expansion into vacuum.

Linear Dielectric Polymers with Ferroelectric-Like Crystals for High-Temperature Capacitive Energy Storage.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Thermal Ageing, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China.

Achieving optimal capacitive energy storage performance necessitates the integration of high energy storage density, typical of ferroelectric dielectrics, with the low polarization loss associated with linear dielectrics. However, combining these characteristics in a single dielectric material is challenging due to the inherent contradictions between the spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric dielectrics and the adaptability of linear dielectrics to changes in the electric field. To address this issue, a linear isotactic sulfonylated polynorbornene dielectric characterized by ferroelectric-like crystals has been developed.

Study of High Performance Nanoscale Channel Length Vertical Transistors with a Self-Aligned Blocking Layer.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), Daegu 42988, Republic of Korea.

A transistor design employing all vertically stacked components has attracted considerable attention due to the simplicity of the fabrication process and the high conductivity easily realized by achieving nanolevel short channel lengths with two-dimensional current paths. However, fundamental issues, specifically the blocking of the gate electrical field to the semiconductive channel layer and high leakage current at the "off" state, have impeded this configuration in becoming a major transistor design. To address these issues, it has been proposed to introduce a blocking layer (BL) with embedded hole structures and source electrode with embedded hole structures, enhancing gate field penetration and carrier modulation.

SARS-CoV-2 Is an Electricity-Driven Virus.

Rev Physiol Biochem Pharmacol

January 2025

Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK.

One of the most important and challenging biological events of recent times has been the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Since the underpinning argument behind this book is the ubiquity of electrical forces driving multiple disparate biological events, consideration of key aspects of the SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins is included. Electrical regulation of spike protein, nucleocapsid protein, membrane protein, and envelope protein is included, with several of their activities regulated by LLPS and the multivalent and π-cation and π-π electrical forces that drive phase separation.

Membrane Surface Charge, Phospholipids, and Protein Localization.

Rev Physiol Biochem Pharmacol

January 2025

Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK.

Cell membranes contain multiple charged lipids that bind proteins dynamically and their spatial organization on the inner/outer membrane leaflet, or in spatially localized areas has considerable biological importance. Myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate (MARCKS) proteins and their roles as electrostatic switches are one example covered. Cell surface charge needs to be monitored and regulated continually and the roles of lipid flippases and scramblases and their electrical regulation also are considered.
