Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is present in >10% of all people admitted to critical care and is associated with severe morbidity and mortality. Despite more than half a century since its first description, no efficacious pharmacological therapies have been developed, and little progress has been made in improving clinical outcomes. Neutrophils are the principal drivers of ARDS, with their priming and subsequent aberrant downstream functions, including interleukin (IL) 1β and IL-18 secretion, central to the disease pathogenesis.

Using two polygenic scores (PGS) for educational attainment in a biomedical study of all those born in a single week in Great Britain in 1958 we show that the genetic predisposition for educational attainment is associated with labour market participation and wages over the life-course for men and women. Those with a higher PGS spend more time in employment and full-time employment and, when in employment, earn higher hourly wages. The employment associations are four times larger for women than for men.

The border line between Bulgaria and Romania was established a century ago on the Danube River's thalweg, going around islands. Over time, islands migrated; to avoid conflicts, islands located on the border line are declared neutral territory by both countries and they exit from use. In this context, the paper aims to draw conclusions on the spatial dynamics of the Danube River's sandy islands along the Bulgaria-Romania border.
