Microplastics (MPs) are constantly degrading while moving through aquatic systems as a result of mechanical abrasion, thermal fluctuations, UV light, and chemical exposure. As such, fish may experience pulse exposures to differentially degraded plastics. This study addresses how pulse exposures, over the course of minutes, to differentially degraded microplastics alters a key ionoregulatory property of the goldfish gill.

The mechanisms of acute (96-hour) and subchronic (28-day) toxicity of the waterborne trace metal thallium (Tl) to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. Specifically, effects on branchial and renal ionoregulatory enzymes (sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphatase [ATPase; NKA] and proton ATPase) and hepatic oxidative stress endpoints (protein carbonylation, glutathione content, and activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase) were examined. Fish (19-55 g) were acutely exposed to 0 (control), 0.

Amazonian blackwaters are extremely biodiverse systems containing some of Earth's most naturally acidic, dissolved organic carbon -rich and ion-poor waters. Physiological adaptations of fish facing these ionoregulatory challenges are unresolved but could involve microbially-mediated processes. Here, we characterize the physiological response of 964 fish-microbe systems from four blackwater Teleost species along a natural hydrochemical gradient, using dual RNA-Seq and 16 S rRNA of gill samples.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have become a significant public health problem worldwide, notably the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever borne by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Thus, mosquito vector control measures remain essential in public health vector surveillance and control to combat Aedes-borne infections. Therefore, a series of MBH adducts were synthesized and assessed towards the fourth instar mosquito larvae, Aedes aegypti, along with the preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR).

Molecular and physiological analyses in ionoregulatory organs (e.g., adult gills and embryonic skin) are essential for studying fish ion regulation.
