In real-world vision, objects may appear for a short period, such as in conjunction with visual search. Presumably, this puts a premium on rapid categorization. We designed a visual categorization task cued by briefly presented images to study how visual categorization is processed in an ethologically relevant context.

Context: Since William Garner Sutherland's inception of osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine (OCMM), osteopathic physicians have practiced with the knowledge that cranial sutures exhibit motion. We hypothesize that the complexity of suture interdigitation in humans may provide clues to elucidate the concept of OCMM.
Objectives: We compared the interdigitation of sagittal, coronal (left and right), and lambdoid (left and right) sutures in computed tomography (CT) scans of humans and five nonhuman primate species (, , , , and ).

What is noise? When does a sound form part of the acoustic background and when might it come to our attention as part of the foreground? Our brain seems to filter out irrelevant sounds in a seemingly effortless process, but how this is achieved remains opaque and, to date, unparalleled by any algorithm. In this review, we discuss how noise can be both background and foreground, depending on what a listener/brain is trying to achieve. We do so by addressing questions concerning the brain's potential bias to interpret certain sounds as part of the background, the extent to which the interpretation of sounds depends on the context in which they are heard, as well as their ethological relevance, task-dependence, and a listener's overall mental state.

Amongst fishes, zebrafish (Danio rerio) has gained popularity as a model system over most other species and while their value as a model is well documented, their usefulness is limited in certain fields of research such as behavior. By embracing other, less conventional experimental organisms, opportunities arise to gain broader insights into evolution and development, as well as studying behavioral aspects not available in current popular model systems. The anabantoid paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis), an "air-breather" species has a highly complex behavioral repertoire and has been the subject of many ethological investigations but lacks genomic resources.
