Through the lens of Guruprasad Kaginele's novel , the issues of intolerance and distrust that exist in American rural hospitals-where the Indian immigrant doctors fail to understand the inhibitions and apprehensions of the African immigrant birthing mothers, turning them into objects of mockery and disgust, despite sharing colonial histories of racialised discrimination, biases and prejudices-are examined. The ruptured relationship between Indian immigrant doctors and Sanghaali Muslim immigrant birthing mothers dramatised in the novel provides an insight into how Indian immigrant doctors' psyche is unconsciously imbued with medical coloniality, which has not received much scholarly attention. Drawing on critical approaches such as various orders of gaze-male, medical, colonial and imperial-and the concept of intersectionality, the hybrid subjectivities of the Indian immigrant doctors, ruptured doctor-patient relationship, and non-agentic status of the immigrant birthing mothers as represented in the novel are analysed.

Background: Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a promising noninvasive parameter for intracranial pressure (ICP) assessment. However, in the setting of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), several previous studies have reported no association between ultrasonically measured ONSD and ICP. In this study, we evaluate ONSD in patients with aSAH using a novel method of automated real-time ultrasonographic measurements and explore whether factors such as having undergone surgery affects its association to ICP.

Background: Racial and ethnic minorities remain underrepresented in the surgical workforce with well-documented barriers to diversity and inclusion, including financial support, lack of mentorship, and high attrition rates. Recent literature has documented race and sex discrimination in the training of surgical residents but little is known about the experience of discrimination at the surgical fellowship level. The goal of our study was to assess attitudes and perceptions of unconscious bias experienced during surgical oncology fellowship training at our institution.

Background: Aperiodic (nonoscillatory) electroencephalogram (EEG) activity can be characterised by its power spectral density, which decays according to an inverse power law. Previous studies reported a shift in the spectral exponent α from consciousness to unconsciousness. We investigated the impact of aperiodic EEG activity on parameters used for anaesthesia monitoring to test the hypothesis that aperiodic EEG activity carries information about the hypnotic component of general anaesthesia.

Purpose Of Review: While prior reviews have assessed barriers to transplantation experienced by patients and their families, they have not summarized how these stakeholders feel about whether and how those barriers impact equity in transplantation. We seek to comprehensively present the literature of patients and family perspectives on disparities in transplant access and potential solutions.

Recent Findings: Some patients and their families report experiences of discrimination, while others from traditionally marginalized groups feel the system is equitable and do not perceive any different treatment as a result of their race/ethnicity, sex, age, religion, or geography.
