Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a multisystem disorder in which dysregulated neuroimmune crosstalk and inflammatory relay via the gut-blood-brain axis have been implicated in PD pathogenesis. Although alterations in circulating inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been associated with PD, no biomarkers have been identified that predict clinical progression or disease outcome. Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction, which involves perturbation of the underlying immune system, is an early and often-overlooked symptom that affects up to 80 % of individuals living with PD.

Allergic Reactivity and Memory Occur Independently of Sequential Switching Through IgG1.

Allergy

January 2025

Schroeder Allergy and Immunology Research Institute, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada.

Allergic reactions to foods are primarily driven by allergen-binding immunoglobulin (Ig)E antibodies. IgE-expressing cells can be generated through direct switching from IgM to IgE or a sequential class switching pathway where activated B cells first switch to an intermediary isotype, most frequently IgG1, and then to IgE. It has been proposed that sequential class switch recombination is involved in augmenting the severity of allergic reactions, generating high affinity IgE, differentiation of IgE plasma cells, and in holding the memory of IgE responses.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy. IgE sensitization to the causative food is often not observed, and the rate of sensitization to other common foods is not exceptionally high. This report discusses the case of a boy being followed up for FPIES due to egg yolk, who developed a buckwheat allergy during the disease.

Tell me what to expect: how instructions affect the pain response of patients with chronic myofascial pain with referral.

J Oral Facial Pain Headache

December 2024

Neuroscience of Emotion Cognition and Nociception Group (NeuroCEN Group), Faculty of Odontology, Complutense University of Madrid, 28040 Madrid, Spain.

The aims of the study are to analyze the influence of pain and no pain expectations on the physiological (electromyography (EMG) and pupillometry) and cognitive (Numerical Rating Scale (NRS)) response to pain. Pain expectation and no pain expectation situations were induced by employing instructional videos. The induction of pain was performed by palpating the masseter with an algometer in a sample of 2 groups: 30 healthy participants (control group) and 30 patients (Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) group) with chronic myofascial pain with referral in the masseter muscle (Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Dissorders (DC/TMD)).

Background: Since its inception in 1980, the MOHL index (% patients who are male, have occupational, hand, or leg dermatitis, respectively) and its later evolutions until the presently used MOAHLFA(P) index (adding % patients with atopic dermatitis, face dermatitis, age 40+ years and positive reaction(s) to ≥ 1 baseline series allergen) have been intended to convey important demographic and clinical information on the patients patch tested in a certain area and time, aiding the interpretation of the observed spectrum of sensitisation.

Objectives: To examine the current usage of the MOAHLFA(P) index and suggest consolidated definitions for its single items.

Methods: A title/abstract search in Medline identified publications mentioning the evolving acronyms.
