The α-helix is an abundant and functionally important element of protein secondary structure, which has motivated intensive efforts toward chemical strategies to stabilize helical folds. One such method is the incorporation of non-canonical backbone composition through an additional methyl substituent at the Cα atom. Examples of monomers include the achiral 2-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) with geminal dimethyl substitution and chiral analogues with one methyl and one non-methyl substituent.

Unlabelled: Studies have suggested that phytochemicals in green tea have systemic anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. However, the mechanisms behind these effects are poorly understood, possibly due to the differential metabolism of phytochemicals resulting from variations in gut microbiome composition. To unravel this complex relationship, our team utilized a novel combined microbiome analysis and metabolomics approach applied to low complexity microbiome (LCM) and human colonized (HU) gnotobiotic mice treated with an acute dose of powdered matcha green tea.

Mercury contamination of the environment is extremely hazardous to human health because of its significant toxicity, especially in water. Biomass-derived fluorophores such as carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative sensors that provide comparable efficacy while mitigating the environmental and economic drawbacks of conventional methods. In this work, we report the fabrication of a selective fluorescence-enhancing sensor based on sulfur-doped carbon dots (SCDs) using waste bamboo-derived cellulose and sodium thiosulfate as the soft base dopant, which actively complexes with mercury ions for detection.

Prostate cancer antigen 3 (PCA3) has emerged as a critical biomarker for the early detection of prostate cancer, complementing the traditional prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing. This research presents a novel resistive sensor based on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) functionalized with glutaraldehyde (GA)/complementary single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) for the detection of the PCA3 RNA. The device was meticulously characterized at each fabrication step to confirm the successful integration of the various layers on the sensor device, utilizing atomic force microscopy (AFM) which confirmed the increase in the thickness of the sensor from ∼1.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is the second most common obstetric complication after preterm labor. Appropriate trophoblast differentiation and placental structure, growth and function are key for the maintenance of pregnancy and normal fetal growth, development and survival. Extravillous trophoblast cell proliferation, migration and invasion are regulated by molecules produced by the fetomaternal interface, including autocrine factors produced by the trophoblast, such as insulin‑like growth factor (IGF)‑1.
