Different approaches are being developed to efficiently produce in vitro platelets from cultured megakaryocytes to meet the constant demand of platelet transfusion and serve for research purposes. Recent works have shown that turbulence and periodic stress can significantly enhance platelet yield. Here we have developed and characterized a platelet production device that takes in account these properties.

Purpose: To present a first principle-based, high-fidelity computational model for predicting full three-dimensional (3D) and time-resolved retinal microvascular hemodynamics taking into consideration the flow and deformation of individual blood cells.

Methods: The computational model is a 3D fluid-structure interaction model based on combined finite volume/finite element/immersed-boundary methods. Three in silico microvascular networks are built from high-resolution in vivo motion contrast images of the superficial capillary plexus in the parafoveal region of the human retina.

Introduction: β-TCP ceramics are bone replacement materials that have recently been tested as a drug delivery system that can potentially be applied to endogenous substances like growth factors found in blood platelets to facilitate positive attributes.

Methods: In this work, we used flow chamber loading to load β-TCP dowels with blood suspensions of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-poor plasma (PPP), or buffy coat (BC) character. PRP and BC platelet counts were adjusted to the same level by dilution.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the safety of the pancreatic body suspension (PBS) technique during laparoscopic splenectomy with pericardial devascularization in 16 patients over 5 years.
  • In the PBS group, the average surgery time was longer at 280 minutes, but they experienced no conversions to open surgery or postoperative bleeding, while the traditional method group had complications like reoperations and postoperative bleeding.
  • The PBS technique resulted in significantly fewer short-term complications (0%) compared to the traditional method (36.36%), suggesting it may be a safer option for this procedure.

Background: Platelets, a type of anucleated cell, play a crucial role in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Therefore, targeting platelet activation is essential for mitigating CVDs. Endogenous agonists, such as collagen, activate platelets by initiating signal transduction through specific platelet receptors, leading to platelet aggregation.
