Background: The case of a benign oncocytoma arising in a patient from retroperitoneal heterotopic adrenocortical tissue is reported; this tumor was found in a 44-year-old man.

Methods: The tumor consisted of polygonal cells with granular eosinophilic cytoplasm packed with swollen mitochondria.

Results: Scattered tumor cells showed abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum suggesting that the tumor was of adrenocortical origin.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of ovarian and paraovarian adrenal rest tumors (ARTs) in gonadectomy materials of a subgroup of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) patients.

Methods: A total of 20 historical cases with clinical/molecular diagnosis of classical CAH were included in the study. All patients had 46,XX karyotype and underwent gonadectomy because of being raised as male.

Background: Rare nodules of heterotopic adrenocortical and hepatic tissue are reported in the placenta. A mechanism for adrenocortical tissue in the placenta has been perplexing, while hepatic tissue is generally considered related to yolk sac primordia. The clear cell morphology of these nodules is similar to the adrenal cortex of the adult; however, the fetal adrenal gland does not usually display clear cells.

As certain strains of mice age, hyperplastic lesions resembling gonadal tissue accumulate beneath the adrenal capsule. Gonadectomy (GDX) accelerates this heterotopic differentiation, resulting in the formation of wedge-shaped adrenocortical neoplasms that produce sex steroids. Stem/progenitor cells that reside in the adrenal capsule and retain properties of the adrenogonadal primordium are thought to be the source of this heterotopic tissue.
