Objective: The association between the shedding of the endothelial glycocalyx (EG) and the pathogenesis of microcirculatory perfusion disturbances has been discussed in experimental studies. This discussion, however, has limited relevance in a clinical setting. We investigated EG shedding in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and its association with alterations in microvascular perfusion.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II (HIT) is a clinicopathologic syndrome in which one or more clinical events are temporally related to heparin administration and caused by HIT antibodies. There are at least five different types of clinical events that are associated with HIT: thrombocytopenia; thrombosis; skin necrosis at heparin injection site, venous limb gangrene; and an acute systemic reaction that occurs 5-30 min after intravenous bolus of heparin. HIT typically presents 5-14 days after initiation of heparin therapy, later onset is unusual.

We report on the case of a 33-year-old male patient who was brought to the emergency room of our hospital after suffering a high-energy trauma due to an automobile accident. Besides a scaphoid fracture there were no signs of any neurological deficits. After several hours without clinical symptoms the patient developed dysarthria as the first manifestation of local cerebral ischemia based on a traumatic dissection of the internal carotid artery.

Regression of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) via regeneration of new elastic matrix is constrained by poor elastin synthesis by adult vascular cells and absence of methods to stimulate the same. We recently showed hyaluronan oligomers (HA-o) and TGF-β1 (termed elastogenic factors) to enhance elastin synthesis and matrix formation by healthy rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs). We also determined that these factors could likewise elastogenically induce aneurysmal RASMCs isolated from periadventitial CaCl(2)-injury induced rat AAAs (aRASMCs).
