We evaluate the capability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to predict a velocity field as it relates to fluid flow around various arrangements of obstacles within a two-dimensional, rectangular channel. We base our network architecture on a gated residual U-Net template and train it on velocity fields generated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. We then assess the extent to which our model can accurately and efficiently predict steady flows in terms of velocity fields associated with inlet speeds and obstacle configurations not included in our training set.

The optical image sub-pixel correlation (SPC) technique is an important method for monitoring large-scale surface deformation. RapidEye images, distinguished by their short revisit period and high spatial resolution, are crucial data sources for monitoring surface deformation. However, few studies have comprehensively analyzed the error sources and correction methods of the deformation field obtained from RapidEye images.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcetylcholine is released in visual cortex by axonal projections from the basal forebrain. The signals conveyed by these projections and their computational significance are still unclear. Using two-photon calcium imaging in behaving mice, we show that basal forebrain cholinergic axons in the mouse visual cortex provide a binary locomotion state signal.

Antipsychotic drugs are a class of small molecules with relatively broad binding affinity for a variety of neuromodulator receptors that, in humans, can prevent or ameliorate psychosis. How these drugs influence the function of cortical circuits, and in particular their ability to distinguish between externally and self-generated activity patterns, is still largely unclear.

A stochastic field theory approach is applied to a coarse-grained polymer model that will enable studies of polymer behavior under non-equilibrium conditions. This article is focused on the validation of the new model in comparison with explicit Langevin equation simulations under conditions with analytical solutions. The polymers are modeled as Hookean dumbbells in one dimension, without including hydrodynamic interactions and polymer-polymer interactions.
