Biological response to stress depends on the type, timing, and severity of the stressor. Acute stressful environments may positively activate molecular and cellular mechanisms to favor adaptation; however, chronic stress is often associated with detrimental health effects. Colon cancer (CC) is one of the leading causes of death associated with cancer and has been mentioned as a stress-related disease.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has reproductive toxicity and can affect male reproductive development. In order to clarify adverse effects of DEHP on testicular physiology and testosterone production, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were dosed daily with DEHP by gavage for 30days; TM3 cells (mouse Leydig cell line) were treated with DEHP for 24h after pretreatment with vitamin C or U0126. Results indicated that the hypothalamic-pituitary-testis (HPT) axis was disturbed and serum testosterone, LH and FSH levels were decreased following DEHP exposure.

While microcystins (MCs) have been reported to exert reproductive toxicity on fish with a sex-dependent effect, the underlying mechanism has been rarely investigated. In the present study, zebrafish were exposed to 1, 5 and 20 μg/L MC-LR for 30 d. The gonad-somatic index declined in all treated males.

The comparison of hypothalamic somatostatin (SRIH)-neuronal systems, hypophyseal somatotroph populations and growth hormone (GH) blood plasma patterns among developmental stages, from infancy until puberty, may help to describe the nature of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal mechanisms underlying the changes in GH on the systemic level leading to the somatic, that is growth and sexual maturity in sheep. The aim of this study was to elucidate (i) developmental importance of hypophysiotrophic action of SRIH, (ii) precise time of maturation of this action and (iii) photoperiodic regulation of the postnatal ontogeny in ewes. The central and peripheral activity of the SRIH-GH axis is described through a sequence of histomorphological and functional changes in Merino ewes born after the summer solstice.

Chickens treated with allylestrenol or diethylstilbestrol in the egg on 9th day of incubation, or one day after hatching, or on both occasions, equally showed histomorphological indications of a distinct ovarian activation at 5 days of age, which was most pronounced in the twice-treated birds. A single steroid exposure at one day of age accounted for inhibition of ovarian activity at 6 weeks, presumably owing to a long-term effect on the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system, which begins to function from the 12th day of incubation.
