: Since 2008, following clinical studies conducted on children that revealed the ability of the β-adrenergic antagonist propranolol to inhibit capillary growth in infantile hemangiomas (IHs), its oral administration has become the first-line treatment for IHs. Although oral propranolol therapy at a dosage of 3 mg/kg/die is effective, it can cause systemic adverse reactions. This therapy is not necessarily applicable to all patients.

Introduction: The introduction of fifth-generation fighter aircraft has raised concerns regarding the impact of high gravitational forces on lung function. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of controlled +Gz exposure, up to +9 Gz, on lung function in military pilots using impulse oscillometry (IOS).

Methods: These studies, conducted in Canada and the Netherlands, involved military pilots undergoing high G centrifuge training.

Expression of MMP1, MMP3, and TIMP1 in intervertebral discs under simulated overload and microgravity conditions.

J Orthop Surg Res

January 2025

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University of China, Gongti South Rd, No. 8, Beijing, 100020, China.

Objective: This study aims to investigate changes in matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP) levels in the intervertebral discs of New Zealand white rabbits under simulated overload and microgravity conditions, focusing on the expression of MMP1, MMP3, and TIMP1. The findings aim to provide a theoretical foundation for preventing and delaying lumbar disc degeneration in these environments.

Methods: Overload was simulated using an animal centrifuge, and microgravity was mimicked through tail suspension.

Aerodynamic performance enhancement of centrifugal compressor using numerical techniques.

F1000Res

January 2025

Department of Aeronautical & Automobile Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, 576104, India.

Background: Centrifugal compressors are dynamic machines utilizing a rotating impeller, efficiently accelerate incoming gases, transforming kinetic energy into pressure energy for compression. They serve a wide range of industries, including air conditioning, refrigeration, gas turbines, industrial processes, and applications such as air compression, gas transportation, and petrochemicals, demonstrating their versatility. Designing a centrifugal compressor poses challenges related to achieving high aerodynamic efficiency, surge and choke control, material selection, rotor dynamics, cavitation, erosion, and addressing environmental considerations while balancing costs.

In the present study, we experimentally investigate the liquid flow induced in a rotating drum (cylindrical tank with a short aspect ratio) aligned horizontally, focusing on the variation in the time-averaged and fluctuating flow structures with different fill ratios. For each fill ratio, controlled by varying the water height, we measure the velocity fields at different cross-sectional planes with particle image velocimetry while varying the rotational speed of the drum. Compared to the condition of a fill ratio of 1.
