Hypoxia upregulates hepatic angiopoietin-2 transcription to promote the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma.

World J Hepatol

December 2024

Research Center of Clinical Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University and Department of Immunology, Medical School of Nantong University, Nantong 226001, Jiangsu Province, China.

Background: Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) level is related to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. However, the dynamic expression and regulatory mechanism of Ang-2 remain unclear.

Aim: To investigate Ang-2 levels in chronic liver diseases and validate early monitoring value with a dynamic model in hepatocarcinogenesis.

In this manuscript we comment on the article by Yang published recently, focusing on how hepatic angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) transcription promote the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is one of the most common and lethal malignancies worldwide, especially in regions with high hepatitis B virus infection rates. Ang-2 is a key mediator of angiogenesis and plays a significant role in the progression of chronic liver diseases towards HCC, particularly in the hypoxic microenvironment.

Zinc pretreatment for protection against intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

World J Gastrointest Surg

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research, Department of General Surgery, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Precision Medicine for Gastrointestinal Tumor, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, Guangdong Province, China.

Background: Intestinal ischemiareperfusion (I/R) injury (II/RI) is a critical condition that results in oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage to multiple organs. Zinc, an essential trace element, offers protective benefits in several tissues during I/R injury, but its effects on intestinal II/RI remain unclear.

Aim: To investigate the effects of zinc pretreatment on II/RI and associated multiorgan damage.

Toluene sulfonic acid remimazolam is a novel benzodiazepine that differs from traditional benzodiazepines (BZDs) due to its rapid onset, swift metabolism, and lack of hepatic or renal metabolism, as well as its reduced effects on cardiac and cerebral functions. Despite its potential advantages, clinical experience with this agent remains limited. This study investigated the effect of remizolam on postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing painless bronchoscopy.

Background: Lung transplantation is a viable lifesaving option for patients with diffuse pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). We present a case of diffuse pulmonary AVMs associated with juvenile polyposis and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (JP-HHT) that was successfully managed by lung transplantation.

Case Presentation: A 19-year-old woman developed severe hypoxemia due to pulmonary AVMs diagnosed at 4 years of age.
