The protopine isolated from a Chinese herb Dactylicapnos scandens Hutch was identified as an inhibitor of both serotonin transporter and noradrenaline transporter in vitro assays. 5-hydroxy-DL-tryptophan(5-HTP)-induced head twitch response (HTR) and tail suspension test were adopted to study whether protopine has anti-depression effect in mice using reference antidepressant fluoxetine and desipramine as positive controls. In HTR test, protopine at doses of 5, 10, 20 mg/kg dose dependently increase the number of 5-HTP-induced HTR.

Behavioral characteristics of olanzapine: an atypical neuroleptic.

Acta Pharmacol Sin

April 2000

Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 200031, China.

Aim: To assess the atypical neuroleptic properties of a novel antipsychotic agent, olanzapine (Ola).

Methods: The action of Ola on apomorpine (Apo)-induced climbing behavior, 5-hydroxy-dl-tryptophan (5-HTP)-induced head twitch response, oxotremorine-induced tremor, and the conditioned avoidance behavior in mice were observed. The catalepsy of mice induced by Ola was also investigated.

Effect of serotonin on the chemiluminescence response of rat peripheral blood leucocytes.

Int J Immunopharmacol

October 1995

Laboratoire de Pharmacologie et Toxicologie Médicale, et INSERM U80, Lyon, France.

Serotonin (5-HT) has been shown to exert various immunomodulatory effects. In this study, the effects of 5-HT, 5-hydroxy-DL-tryptophan (5-HTP) and DL-p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) on the chemiluminescence (CL) responses of rat peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) activated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), opsonized zymosan or latex beads were assessed. The CL responses were measured following in vitro treatment with 0.

1. Intracellular recordings were made from lumbar alpha-motoneurones in unanaesthetized decerebrate acute spinal cats. The response of motoneurones to direct current pulse injection or synaptic excitation was investigated following intravenous injection of L-beta-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA, 20-120 mg/kg) alone, nialamide (10-50 mg/kg) and L-DOPA or clonidine (0.
