Multiparametric MRI Assessment of Morpho-Functional Muscle Changes Following a 6-Month FES-Cycling Training Program: Pilot Study in People With a Complete Spinal Cord Injury.

JMIR Rehabil Assist Technol

January 2025

Istituto di Sistemi e Tecnologie Industriali Intelligenti per il Manifatturiero Avanzato, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, via Alfonso Corti, 12, Milan, 20133, Italy, 39 02 2369 993.

Background: Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) cause debilitating secondary conditions such as severe muscle deterioration, cardiovascular, and metabolic dysfunctions, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) combined with cycling exercise (FES-cycling) has shown promise in improving muscle function and health in individuals with SCI.

Objective: This pilot study aimed to investigate the potential role of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess muscle health during and after an FES-cycling rehabilitation program.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal substitute with stromal vascular fraction vs. partial thickness skin grafts for the treatment of intermediate-deep burns of the hand: a retrospective case-control study.

Ann Burns Fire Disasters

December 2024

Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and Jonic Area, University of Bari, Bari, Italy.

Deep intermediate burns of the hand are a challenge for both the functional and aesthetic result. In this study we compare the efficacy of early selective enzymatic escarolysis followed by the application of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) extracted from autologous adipose tissue on a dermal substitute scaffold (DS) versus reconstruction by partial thickness skin grafts (PTSG). We enrolled all patients admitted to our referral Burn Center from September 2020 to January 2022 with deep intermediate burns of the hands: clinical data were collected, then the first group of 4 patients were treated with PTSG surgical reconstruction, and the second group of 7 patients with DS+SVF.

This narrative review comprehensively synthesizes laser technology's clinical applications, advantages, and limitations in modern dentistry. The review of 67 articles published between 2018 and 2023 highlights the latest advancements, including photobiomodulation (PBM) for enhanced tissue healing and inflammation control, alongside innovative uses in implantology, endodontics, and teeth whitening. The findings underscore the transformative potential of lasers in improving dental treatment precision and patient outcomes while addressing the barriers to their widespread adoption, such as costs and training needs.

The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a widely used tool for quantifying hepatic dysfunction, providing greater accuracy and a wider range of values compared to the Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) score, being also used in prioritizing patients who are eligible for liver transplantation. This study assessed the correlation between the MELD score and the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II (EuroSCORE II), a reliable system for categorizing risk levels in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. This retrospective study analyzed data from 589 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases 'Prof.

Testosterone/cortisol ratio: gender effect and prediction of podium results in beach sprint master rowers.

Front Sports Act Living

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Dental Sciences, and Morpho-Functional Imaging, University Hospital, Messina, Italy.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to address the lack of data on the stress and motivation response in master athletes during competitions, as athletic performance in this age group can be significantly impacted by stress rather than appropriate training.

Methods: Coastal rowing beach sprint master athletes aged 43-57 years were examined to assess the saliva levels of stress biomarkers, cortisol, and testosterone. Specifically, samples were collected at awakening and before and after the boat race.
