The red blood cell (RBC) membrane is unique and crucial for maintaining structural-functional relationships. Maternal smoking induces significant changes in the morphological, rheological, and functional parameters of both maternal and foetal RBCs, mainly due to the continuous generation of the free radicals. The major aim of this study was to follow the consequences of a secondary stressor, like fungal infection, on the already compromised RBC populations.

Variations and Opportunities in Postnatal Management of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands.

Importance: Preventive efforts in pregnancy-related alloimmunization have considerably decreased the prevalence of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). International studies are therefore essential to obtain a deeper understanding of the postnatal management and outcomes of HDFN. Taken together with numerous treatment options, large practice variations among centers may exist.

The modern use of hydroxyurea for children with sickle cell anemia.

Haematologica

January 2025

Division of Hematology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati OH; University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati OH; Global Health Center, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati OH.

Over the past 40 years, the introduction and refinement of hydroxyurea therapy has led to remarkable progress for the care of individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA). From initial small proof-of-principle studies to multi-center Phase 3 controlled clinical trials and then numerous open-label studies, the consistent benefits of once-daily oral hydroxyurea have been demonstrated across the lifespan. Elevated fetal hemoglobin (HbF) serves as the most important treatment response, as HbF delays sickle hemoglobin polymerization and reduces erythrocyte sickling.

Red blood cell (RBC) alloimmunization can occur because of exposure to various sensitizing factors and poses a constant threat in transfusion. Assisted reproductive technology (ART) involves manipulation of sperm, ova, or embryos with the goal of producing a pregnancy. We present an interesting case of ART-induced maternal alloimmunization (AIMA) due to anti-c in a woman carrying a twin pregnancy.

Purpose: Fetal nucleated red blood cells (fNRBCs) in the peripheral blood of pregnant women contain comprehensive fetal genetic information, making them an ideal target for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD). However, challenges in identifying, enriching, and detecting fNRBCs limit their diagnostic potential.

Methods: To overcome these obstacles, we developed a novel biomimetic chip, replicating the micro-nano structure of red rose petals on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
