By employing the 14C-urea breath test as the reference method we determined the specificity and sensitivity of three bioptic methods for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in 103 subjects. All biopsy specimens were obtained from the gastric antrum. For culture the specificity was 100%. Its applicability was reduced, however, by a low sensitivity (73.8%) and a delay of several days before the final result was available. Microscopy of Loeffler-stained biopsy smears yielded a specificity of 100% and a sensitivity of 92.9%, but the method was regarded time-consuming. The rapid urease test yielded a specificity of 98.4% and a sensitivity of 85.7%. Being quick, simple and inexpensive the rapid urease test is well suited for routine use in gastroscopy.

Urologic patients with anatomic abnormalities can be particularly susceptible to urinary tract infections (UTI). UTI with urease-producing bacteria can promote struvite urinary calculi and pose unique treatment problems. There is potential for rapid stone growth and bacterial eradication can be difficult secondary to urothelial or stone colonization.

Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Biological Sciences, Birla Institute of Technology and Science - Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, Hyderabad, Telangana 500078, India.

The increasing global population has raised the demand for cow milk, leading to its adulteration with harmful substances, including urea and glucose, that cause damage to humans when consumed regularly. Hence, this study started with predicting urea and glucose toxicity using ProTox-III software, wherein the results revealed that urea belongs to class IV with an LD value of 6350 mg kg and glucose belongs to class VI with an LD value of 23 000 mg kg. Then, a qualitative colorimetric kit and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used for the preliminary detection of urea and glucose in cow milk.

Protection of Enzymes Against Heat Inactivation by Enzyme-Polymer Conjugates.

Macromol Rapid Commun

January 2025

State Key Lab of Polymer Materials Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610065, China.

Along with the quick advancements in enzyme technology, inactivation has emerged as the key barrier for enzymes to be fully utilized as biocatalysts. Here, a novel strategy is presented for the preservation of the enzymatic activity even after heat treatment by grafting enzymes onto the thermal responsive block copolymer via an activated ester-amine reaction. A new water-soluble activated ester monomer, acrylic polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized 3-fluoro-4-hydroxybenzoate is synthesized.

Heavy metal contamination is a serious food safety issue. Herein, we report a rapid, multiplexed and naked-eye readable method for detecting heavy metal pollution in food samples using a cheap colorimetric paper, including milk. We leverage the urease catalysis reaction to amplify the presence of heavy metal ions, Hg and Pb, by exploiting their strong inhibitory effect on urease.
