Objectives: Cancer-related cachexia affects approximately 50% to 80% of cancer patients and contributes significantly to cancer-related mortality, accounting for 20% of deaths. This multifactorial syndrome is characterized by systemic inflammation, anorexia, and elevated energy expenditure, leading to severe weight loss and muscle wasting. Understanding the underlying mechanisms is critical for developing effective interventions.

Personalized treatment approaches in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Arab J Gastroenterol

January 2025

Endemic Medicine Department, Faculty of Medicine, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt; Liver Disease Research Center, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh 11411, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Personalized medicine is an emerging field that provides novel approaches to disease's early diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and prognosis based on the patient's criteria in gene expression, environmental factors, lifestyle, and diet. To date, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a significant global health burden, with an increasing incidence and significant death rates, despite advancements in surveillance, diagnosis, and therapeutic approaches. The majority of HCC lesions develop in patients with liver cirrhosis, carrying the risks of mortality associated with both the tumor burden and the cirrhosis.

Cutting-edge lipid-lowering pharmacological therapies: Improving lipid control beyond statins.

Hipertens Riesgo Vasc

January 2025

Hospital Pharmacist Manager, Pharmaceutical Department, Asl Napoli 3 Sud., Italy. Electronic address:

Statins are crucial for both the prevention and management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, even with optimized statin therapy, a significant residual risk of ASCVD remains, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to lipid-lowering therapies (LLT) that more effectively target low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and other atherogenic lipoproteins. Recently, novel pharmacologic agents have been introduced for the management of dyslipidemia.

Coronary artery calcium (CAC) score is a neglected biomarker that can be derived from non-cardiac chest computed tomography scan and represents a surrogate for atherosclerosis. We created a simulation model using different CAC score values in the MESA coronary artery risk score in a population derived from the Fourier Trial. CAC score could modulate the sample sizes of cardiovascular trials in primary and secondary prevention and offer new primary prevention treatments to high-risk subjects with reasonable numbers needed to treat comparable to secondary prevention trials.

Decoding the trajectory of antibiotic resistance genes in saline and alkaline soils: Insights from different fertilization regimes.

Environ Int

December 2024

Agro-Environmental Protection Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Key Laboratory of Original Agro-Environmental Pollution Prevention and Control, MARA, Tianjin and Tianjin Key Laboratory of Agro-Environment and Agro-Product Safety, Tianjin 300191, China. Electronic address:

The soil salinity and alkalinity play an important role in the occurrence and proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Yet, little is known the underlying mechanism by which soil salinity and alkalinity affect antibiotic resistance evolution. Here we investigated the ARGs variation in soil salinity and alkalinity environments created by different fertilization, and explored the biological mechanisms that salinity and alkalinity alter the evolutionary paradigm of antibiotic resistance.
