Spiders of the genus represent a public health problem in Brazil due to the severity of the cutaneous and systemic effects that may result from their bite. In the systemic form of loxoscelism, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation can occur. Despite the seriousness of accidents, the venom of some species has not yet been properly characterized considering these hemotoxic effects, such as that of , , and .

Plasma from patients with vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia displays increased fibrinolytic potential and enhances tissue-type plasminogen activator but not urokinase-mediated plasminogen activation.

J Thromb Haemost

March 2024

Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, the Central Clinical School, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; Department of Hematology, Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare complication of adenovirus vector-based COVID-19 vaccines. VITT is associated with markedly raised levels of D-dimer; yet, how VITT modulates the fibrinolytic system is unknown.

Objectives: We aimed to compare changes in fibrinolytic activity in plasma from patients with VITT, patients diagnosed with venous thromboembolism (VTE) after vaccination but without VITT (VTE-no VITT), and healthy vaccinated controls.

The effect of proteinase on the proteins of the human hemostasis system, fibrin, fibrinogen, plasminogen, protein C, and factor X, was studied. These proteins are key targets for proteolytic enzymes in therapy and diagnosis of thromboembolic complications. It was shown that proteinase efficiently cleaves fibrin and fibrinogen, but does not act precisely, since it cuts all three subunits of these proteins.

Fibrinogenolysis and fibrinolysis in vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis.

J Thromb Haemost

December 2023

Aberdeen Cardiovascular & Diabetes Centre, Institute of Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK. Electronic address:

Background: Vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) is a rare syndrome associated with adenoviral vector vaccines for COVID-19. The syndrome is characterized by thrombosis, anti-platelet factor 4 (PF4) antibodies, thrombocytopenia, high D-dimer, and hypofibrinogenemia.

Objectives: To investigate abnormalities in fibrinolysis that contribute to the clinical features of VITT.

Background: Fibrin-rich clot formation in thrombo-occlusive pathologies is currently treated by systemic administration of plasminogen activators (e.g. tPA), to convert fibrin-associated plasminogen to plasmin for fibrinolytic action.
