The diverse and complex functions of collagen during the development of an organism are closely related to the polymorphism of its supramolecular structures in the extracellular matrix. SLS (segment-long-spacing) is one of the best understood alternative structures of collagen. SLS played an instrumental role in the original studies of collagen more than half a century ago that laid the foundation of nearly everything we know about collagen today.

Purpose: To elucidate the pathogenesis of macular hole retinal detachment (RD) in highly myopic eyes by investigating the ultrastructure of surgically removed epiretinal membranes (ERM).

Methods: Five consecutive Japanese patients with macular hole RD in highly myopic eyes underwent vitrectomy with attempted removal of the ERM around the hole. The surgical specimens were examined by light microscopy and by scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

Determinants of induced abortion and their policy implications in four counties in north China.

March 1996

Institute of Population Research, Peking University, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

A retrospective survey conducted in four counties in North China in 1991-92 shows that the probability of aborting a pregnancy is strongly related to parity. No induced abortions are found prior to the first live birth, and almost universal abortion is shown after the second. Women had a high risk of undergoing abortion after their first live birth because most (82 percent) had become pregnant again without meeting official requirements for late second births with long spacing between births.

An electron microscopic observation of a corneal lenticule removed 14 months after epikeratoplasty because of refractive error and an unused lenticule was carried out to determine the presence of long-spacing collagen. In the removed lenticule, long-spacing collagen, which is often described as the product of the keratocytes migrating from the host corneal stroma, was observed near a keratocyte. However, long-spacing collagen was also observed in the unused lenticule.

The so-called long-spacing collagen that exhibits approximately 100 nm periodicity has been observed in the interstitial connective tissue of various organs under normal and pathological conditions. Although we, as well as many other investigators, have reported an increasing amount of these structures with age in the human trabecular meshwork, the pathological significance and the mechanism of its formation are still unknown. We incubated mouse ocular tissues in culture medium containing 20 mM ATP and prepared them for electron microscopic observation according to the method of Bruns et al (J Cell Biol 103:393, 1986).
