The escalating global threat of antibiotic resistance necessitates innovative strategies, such as the combination of antibiotics with adjuvants. Monotherapy with rifampicin is more likely to induce resistance in pathogens compared to other antibiotics. Herein, we found that the antihypertensive drug guanethidine enhanced the activity of rifampicin against certain clinically resistant Gram-negative bacteria, resulting in a reduction of up to 128-fold in the minimum inhibitory concentration.

Introduction: 123 I-MIBG has been well established as a functional imaging tool, and 131 I-MIBG therapy is being considered for catecholamine-secreting tumors. Tumors with the characteristics of a noradrenergic biochemical phenotype, small, malignant, metastatic, extra-adrenal, bilateral, and hereditary, especially SDHx -related tumors, are reported to correlate with reduced MIBG uptake. However, the potential molecular mechanisms influencing MIBG uptake have been poorly studied.

Article Synopsis
  • * Chemical analysis and spectroscopic methods were used to determine the structure and absolute stereochemistry of the newly identified compounds.
  • * The isolated compounds were tested for anti-biofouling activity against the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, with the new compound showing strong potential as a natural anti-biofouling agent.

Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is a ubiquitous enzyme that regulates the biosynthesis of tetrahydrofolate among various species of Plasmodium parasite. It is a validated target of the antifolate drug pyrimethamine (Pyr) in Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), but its clinical efficacy has been hampered due to the emergence of drug resistance. This has made the attempt to screen Food & Drug Administration-approved drugs against wild- and mutant PfDHFR by employing an in-silico pipeline to identify potent candidates.

Objective: To observe the effect of mustard oil application at "Liangmen" (ST21) on gastric ulcer (GU) and gastric motility and its association with the sympathetic nerve activity in rats with GU, so as to provide experimental basis for improvement of GU by acupoint application.

Methods: Thirty-nine male SD rats were randomly divided into control (=7), model, acupoint application (AA), medication (guanethidine, an adrenergic sympathetic antagonist) and AA+medication groups (=8 in each of the latter 4 groups). The GU model was made by applying acetic acid-immersed filter paper onto the gastric antrum.
