Purpose: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive therapeutic procedure that consists of irradiating a local area of the skin with red and near-infrared lasers or light emitting diodes (LEDs). Local PBM has been studied as a method to improve exercise performance and recovery. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of whole-body PBM for exercise performance and recovery, comparing its findings to the established effects of localized PBM.

Background: Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder affecting millions worldwide, with significant impacts on daily functioning and quality of life. While traditionally assessed through subjective measures such as the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the advent of wearable technology has enabled continuous, objective sleep monitoring in natural environments. However, the relationship between subjective insomnia severity and objective sleep parameters remains unclear.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), impacting nearly 50 million individuals globally, is a major contributor to ischaemic strokes, predominantly originating from the left atrial appendage (LAA). Current clinical scores like CHA₂DS₂-VASc, while useful, provide limited insight into the pro-thrombotic mechanisms of Virchow's triad-blood stasis, endothelial damage, and hypercoagulability. This study leverages biophysical computational modelling to deepen our understanding of thrombogenesis in AF patients.

The Potential of Neonatal Organ Donation in Central Sweden.

Cell Transplant

January 2025

Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

Pediatric organ transplant recipients have a higher risk for wait list mortality due to the scarcity of size matched organs. Neonatal organ donation could potentially ameliorate the discrepancy but is currently not implemented in Sweden. This study aims to evaluate the potential of neonatal organ donation in central Sweden using a standardized protocol with organ specific criteria.

Impact of Vein Wall Hyperelasticity and Blood Flow Turbulence on Hemodynamic Parameters in the Inferior Vena Cava with a Filter.

Micromachines (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH 44195, USA.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are vital in preventing pulmonary embolism (PE) by trapping large blood clots, especially in patients unsuitable for anticoagulation. In this study, the accuracy of two common simplifying assumptions in numerical studies of IVC filters-the rigid wall assumption and the laminar flow model-is examined, contrasting them with more realistic hyperelastic wall and turbulent flow models. Using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques, the investigation focuses on three hemodynamic parameters: time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), and relative residence time (RRT).
