[Acute enterorrhagia. A diagnostic-therapeutic approach].

Published: August 1992

The Authors report their experience in cases of severe lower intestinal bleeding. On the basis of personal data and previously reported results, endoscopy is shown to be the primary and sometimes essential method, especially in the case of colo-rectal bleeding, both in terms of its diagnostic precision and possible therapeutic uses. This technique was used to treat all emergency cases, obtaining a diagnostic resolution in 85.6% and hemostasis and/or the concomitant removal of the lesion in 52.3% of cases.

Gastrointestinal bleeding as presentation of small bowel metastases of malignant melanoma: Is surgery a good choice?

Int J Surg Case Rep

October 2014

Università degli Studi di Bari, Unità Operativa di Chirurgia Generale "G. Marinaccio", Azienda Ospedaliera Policlinico di Bari, Piazza G. Cesare 1, 70124 Bari, Italy.

Introduction: Melanoma shows a particular predilection in involving small intestine both in a single site and in multiple localization and acute or chronic gastrointestinal bleedings are often the first sign of tumour.

Presentation Of Case: We report two cases of GI metastases of malignant melanoma, one presented with only a big mass that cause intestinal obstruction and the other with a tumour spread throughout the small intestine that produce enterorrhagia.

Discussion: Diagnosis and follow-up are very difficult: CT scan, PET-CT scan and capsule endoscopy should be complementary for the assessment of patients with GI symptoms and melanoma history.

In this preliminary retrospective study, severe postoperative complications following surgery for colorectal cancer were analysed, comparing the results obtained with open versus laparoscopic colectomy. Over the period 2005-2007, 50 patients (29 female, 21 male; age range: 32-85 years) underwent surgical treatment for colorectal-anal cancer. Twenty-nine (58%) were submitted to the traditional open technique and 21 (42%) to the laparoscopic technique.
