Arthropod-borne viral diseases are acute febrile illnesses, sometimes with chronic effects, that can be debilitating and even fatal worldwide, affecting particularly vulnerable populations. Indigenous communities face not only the burden of these acute febrile illnesses, but also the cardiovascular complications that are worsened by urbanization. A cross-sectional study was conducted in an Indigenous population in the Northeast Region of Brazil to explore the association between arboviral infections (dengue, chikungunya, and Zika) and cardiac biomarkers, including cardiotrophin 1, growth differentiation factor 15, lactate dehydrogenase B, fatty-acid-binding protein 3, myoglobin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, cardiac troponin I, big endothelin 1, and creatine kinase-MB, along with clinical and anthropometric factors.

Case of Fatal Hepatitis Related to HEV-3 Infection in Central Italy.

Viruses

November 2024

Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Section, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Perugia, 06132 Perugia, Italy.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a global health problem, causing an estimated 20 million infections annually. Thus, the management of HEV requires special consideration. In developed countries, hepatitis E is mainly recognized as a foodborne disease (mainly transmitted via undercooked meat consumption) that is generally caused by genotype 3 and 4 circulating in various animals, including pigs and wild boars.

The Post-Acute COVID-19-Vaccination Syndrome in the Light of Pharmacovigilance.

Vaccines (Basel)

December 2024

Central Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics, Medical Faculty, Heinrich Heine University, University Hospital, 40255 Düsseldorf, Germany.

Clinical studies show that SARS-CoV-2 vaccination sometimes entails a severe and disabling chronic syndrome termed post-acute-COVID-19-vaccination syndrome (PACVS). PACVS shares similarities with long COVID. Today, PACVS is still not officially recognised as a disease.

Drug Delivery Across the Blood-Brain Barrier: A New Strategy for the Treatment of Neurological Diseases.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics, Institute of Biophysics, School of Health Sciences and Biomedical Engineering, Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin 300401, China.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) serves as a highly selective barrier between the blood and the central nervous system (CNS), and its main function is to protect the brain from foreign substances. This physiological property plays a crucial role in maintaining CNS homeostasis, but at the same time greatly limits the delivery of drug molecules to the CNS, thus posing a major challenge for the treatment of neurological diseases. Given that the high incidence and low cure rate of neurological diseases have become a global public health problem, the development of effective BBB penetration technologies is important for enhancing the efficiency of CNS drug delivery, reducing systemic toxicity, and improving the therapeutic outcomes of neurological diseases.

Tissue Engineering Construct for Articular Cartilage Restoration with Stromal Cells from Synovium vs. Dental Pulp-A Pre-Clinical Study.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Sports Medicine Division, Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Hospital das Clínicas HCFMUSP, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo 05403-010, SP, Brazil.

Background/objectives: Cartilage injuries and osteoarthritis are prevalent public health problems, due to their disabling nature and economic impact. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) isolated from different tissues have the immunomodulatory capacity to regulate local joint environment. This translational study aims to compare cartilage restoration from MSCs from the synovial membrane (SM) and dental pulp (DP) by a tissue-engineered construct with Good Manufacturing Practices.
