Enamel hypoplasia (EH) is a prevalent developmental defect of teeth that can result from various insults, including prenatal nutrient deficiencies. This study aimed to evaluate the association between prenatal serum retinol deficiency and EH in the deciduous teeth of offspring at 2-y of age. A cohort of 1,450 pregnant women was enrolled, and their prenatal nutritional status was assessed between 12 and 14 wk of gestation.

Background: The retinol level and retinol delivery to the placenta may vary depending on various factors involving the mother and newborn. The present study evaluates the factors affecting retinol levels in newborns and the transplacental retinol passage in preterm newborns.
Methods: In this prospective cohort study, the retinol and retinol binding protein (RBP) in the umbilical cord blood of 44 preterm infants with a gestation age of <30 weeks were studied.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in the development of the immune system, and a deficiency can cause blindness associated with xerophthalmia and premature mortality. Blindness from vitamin A deficiency is avoidable if supplements such as breast milk and other food fortification are provided to neonates at the time of weaning. The authors describe two infants who presented with keratomalacia and subsequent blindness.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, from January 2010 to December 2012, and comprised patients with ocular surface disorders. Patients' presenting symptoms and signs were recorded.
