Purpose: Late-onset epilepsy (LOE) usually refers to the development of epilepsy at the age of 50 years or older. Approximately 20 % of LOE cases are diagnosed as late-onset epilepsy of unknown etiology (LOUE) due to a lack of an identifiable cause. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features, seizure and cognitive outcomes of patients with LOUE in West China.

Background: Seizures, including status epilepticus (SE), are common in anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis (NMDARE). We aimed to describe clinical and electrographic features of patients with seizures with NMDARE, determine factors associated with SE, and describe long-term seizure outcomes.
Methods: We retrospectively identified patients with seizures in the setting of NMDARE treated at inpatient Mayo Clinic sites during the acute phase of encephalitis between October 2008 and March 2023.

Recent studies have described unique aspects of default mode network connectivity in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). A complete background in this field could be gained by combining this research with spectral analysis. An important objective of this study was to compare linear connectivity and power spectral densities across different activity bands of patients with juvenile absence epilepsy (JAE), juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), generalized tonic-clonic seizures alone (EGTCSA), and drug-resistant IGE (DR-IGE) with healthy, age-matched controls.

Herein, we present a case of idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) manifesting as de novo late-onset absence status epilepticus (ASE) following mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A woman in her 40s presented with persistent 3-5.5 Hz generalized spike-wave complexes (SWCs) on electroencephalography (EEG).

Alteration of responses to salient stimuli occurs in a wide range of brain disorders and may be rooted in pathophysiological brain state dynamics. Specifically, tonic and phasic modes of activity in the reticular activating system (RAS) influence, and are influenced by, salient stimuli, respectively. The RAS influences the spectral characteristics of activity in the neocortex, shifting the balance between low- and high-frequency fluctuations.
