First branchial cleft anomalies in children: long-term outcome in 16 patients.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

January 2025

Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, University Hospitals Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Introduction: First branchial cleft anomalies (FBCA) are rare congenital head and neck malformations, often subject to incorrect diagnosis and treatment. We present our experience with FBCA, focusing on clinical presentation, diagnosis, perioperative relation to the facial nerve, surgical approach, complications and patient satisfaction.

Methods: A consecutive cohort of 16 patients undergoing surgical treatment for FBCA between 1999 and 2021 was analyzed.

Selective Neurectomy with Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface Surgery for Facial Synkinesis.

Facial Plast Surg Aesthet Med

January 2025

Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

Selective neurectomy (SN) typically leaves cut nerve endings to be either free-floating or buried in facial muscles. Regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNIs) use autologous skeletal muscle grafts to provide a nonfacial muscle target for reinnervation. To evaluate the effectiveness of RPNI surgery with SN for improving postoperative facial function through botulinum toxin use and facial movement metrics.

Imaging of elbow entrapment neuropathies.

Insights Imaging

January 2025

IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi, Milan, Italy.

Entrapment neuropathies at the elbow are common in clinical practice and require an accurate diagnosis for effective management. Understanding the imaging characteristics of these conditions is essential for confirming diagnoses and identifying underlying causes. Ultrasound serves as the primary imaging modality for evaluating nerve structure and movement, while MRI is superior for detecting muscle denervation.

Permanent tactile sensory loss reduces neuronal activity in the amygdala and ventral hippocampus and alters anxiety-like behaviors.

Behav Brain Res

January 2025

Laboratorio de Neurociencias, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad de Colima, Colima, Mexico 28040. Electronic address:

Tactile information from the whiskers (vibrissae) travels through the somatosensory cortex to the entorhinal cortex and the hippocampus, influencing development and psychological well-being. The lack of whiskers affects cognitive functions, spatial memory, neuronal firing, spatial mapping, and neurogenesis in the dorsal hippocampus. Recent studies underline the importance of tactile experiences in emotional health, noting that while tactile stimuli modulate the dorsal hippocampus, the effects of tactile deprivation on anxiety-like behaviors and neural activity in regions like the ventral hippocampus and amygdala are less understood.

Rethinking brachial plexus birth palsy: Beyond physician blame.

J Hand Microsurg

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Olympia Hospital & Research Centre, 47, 47A Puthur High Road, Puthur, Trichy, Tamilnadu, 620017, India.

Brachial plexus birth palsy, a devastating injury affecting newborns, has long been a source of contention and misunderstanding. This article aims to dispel the myth that healthcare providers are solely responsible for these injuries, presenting evidence that highlights the complex interplay of maternal, fetal, and biological factors in their causation. By shifting the narrative away from blame and towards a more comprehensive understanding, we can foster a more supportive and informed approach to childbirth.
