Toxic Effects of Butanol in the Plane of the Cell Membrane.

Langmuir

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio 45220, United States.

Solvent toxicity limits -butanol fermentation titer, increasing the cost and energy consumption for subsequent separation processes and making biobased production more expensive and energy-intensive than petrochemical approaches. Amphiphilic solvents such as -butanol partition into the cell membrane of fermenting microorganisms, thinning the transverse structure, and eventually causing a loss of membrane potential and cell death. In this work, we demonstrate the deleterious effects of -butanol partitioning upon the lateral dimension of the membrane structure, called membrane domains or lipid rafts.

Solvent induced method for preparation of multi-advantage carrageenan films.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy, Fujian Vocational College of Bioengineering, Fuzhou 350000, China. Electronic address:

Carrageenan has good film-forming characteristics, but it is difficult to simultaneously improve its multiple performances, such as water-resistance, light transmittance and thermal stability. In this study, multi-advantage composite films were prepared by iota-carrageenan and quaternary ammonium surfactants according to solvent induced method. The weight change, FTIR and thermogravimetric analyses of the films before and after solvent inducement indicated that the inorganic counterions of iota-carrageenan were replaced by quaternary ammonium ions.

AuCl(PMe) and AuCl(PEt) were used to react with quinoline-8-thiolate (8-QNS) to give three Au(I) complexes, i.e., [8-QNS(AuPMe)]ClO (), [(8-QNS)Ag(AuPMe)]ClO (), and [8-QNS(AuPEt)]ClO (), which have been structurally determined by X-ray diffraction to show various intra- and intermolecular metal···metal contacts (i.

The limited understanding of the mechanism of action (MoA) of several antimalarials and the rise of drug resistance toward existing malaria therapies emphasizes the need for new strategies to uncover the molecular target of compounds in . Integral solvent-induced protein precipitation (iSPP) is a quantitative mass spectrometry-based (LC-MS/MS) proteomics technique. The iSPP leverages the change in solvent-induced denaturation of the drug-bound protein relative to its unbound state, allowing identification of the direct drug-protein target without the need to modify the drug.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to global health. The rapid emergence of resistance contrasts with the slow pace of antimicrobial development, emphasizing the urgent need for innovative drug discovery approaches. This study addresses a critical bottleneck in early drug development by introducing integral solvent-induced protein precipitation (iSPP) to rapidly assess the target-engagement of lead compounds in extracts of pathogenic microorganisms under close-to-physiological conditions.
