Importance: Hypertension is a risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is unclear whether different thiazide diuretics have a differential impact on kidney outcomes.

Objective: To compare kidney outcomes in patients with hypertension taking chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide.

Combining Loop and Thiazide Diuretics Across the Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Spectrum: The CLOROTIC Trial.

JACC Heart Fail

October 2024

Internal Medicine Department, Hospital d'Olot i Comarcal de la Garrotxa, Avinguda dels Països Catalans Olot, Girona, Spain; Tissue Repair and Regeneration Laboratory (TR2Lab), Institut de Recerca i Innovació en Ciències de la Vida i de la Salut a la Catalunya Central (IrisCC), Ctra. de Roda, Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The CLOROTIC trial studied the effects of adding hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) to furosemide in patients with acute heart failure, showing improved diuretic responses regardless of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) levels.
  • A total of 230 patients were analyzed, with results indicating that HCTZ led to better weight loss and diuretic measures within 72 hours, with no significant impacts on mortality or rehospitalization rates across different LVEF categories.
  • The findings suggest that combining HCTZ with furosemide is an effective approach for enhancing diuretic effectiveness in acute heart failure patients, irrespective of their baseline LVEF.

Diuretics use in the management of hypertension.

Hipertens Riesgo Vasc

July 2024

Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Universitat de València, Spain. Electronic address:

Diuretics have been used for decades in the treatment of hypertension. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials. It is well known that the reduction in cardiovascular risk is a consequence of the reduction in blood pressure levels regardless of the drug used, but thiazide diuretics continue to be first-line drugs, especially in low doses and combined with other drugs.

Importance: Patients with prior myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke have a greater risk of recurrent cardiovascular (CV) events.

Objective: To evaluate the association of chlorthalidone (CTD) vs hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) with CV outcomes and noncancer deaths in participants with and without prior MI or stroke.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This was a prespecified secondary analysis of the Diuretic Comparison Project (DCP), a pragmatic randomized clinical trial conducted within 72 participating Veterans Affairs health care systems from June 2016 to June 2021, in which patients aged 65 years or older with hypertension taking HCTZ at baseline were randomized to continue HCTZ or switch to CTD at pharmacologically comparable doses.

A Comprehensive Strategy for Stepwise Design of a Lab PROTOTYPE for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants in Water Using Cyclodextrin Polymers as Adsorbent Material.

Int J Mol Sci

February 2024

Molecular Recognition and Encapsulation Research Group (REM), Health Sciences Department, Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), Campus de los Jerónimos 135, E-30107 Guadalupe, Spain.

The significant environmental issue of water pollution caused by emerging contaminants underscores the imperative for developing novel cleanup methods that are efficient, economically viable, and that are intended to operate at high capacity and under continuous flows at the industrial scale. This study shows the results of the operational design to build a prototype for the retention at lab scale of pollutant residues in water by using as adsorbent material, insoluble polymers prepared by β-cyclodextrin and epichlorohydrin as a cross-linking agent. Laboratory in-batch tests were run to find out the adsorbent performances against furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide as pollutant models.
