A critical view of silk fibroin for non-viral gene therapy.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

National Engineering Laboratory for Modern Silk, College of Textile and Clothing Engineering, Soochow University, No. 199 Ren'ai Road, Industrial Park, Suzhou 215123, PR China. Electronic address:

Exogenous genes are inserted into target cells during gene therapy in order to compensate or rectify disorders brought on by faulty or aberrant genes. However, gene therapy is still in its early stages because of its unsatisfactory therapeutic effects which are mainly due to low transfection efficiency of vectors, high toxicity, and poor target specificity. A natural polymer with numerous bioactive sites, good mechanical qualities, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and processability called silk fibroin has gained attention as a possible gene therapy vector.

Y-shaped venous anastomosis combined with free flap for the treatment of complex craniofacial trauma.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, 563000 China; The Collaborative Innovation Center of Tissue, Damage Repair and Regeneration Medicine of Zunyi Medical University, 563000 China. Electronic address:

Background: Complex craniofacial trauma is defined as those traumatic injuries that are not responding to initial treatment and may involve chronic infection, tissue exposure, and soft tissue contusions. Typical reconstruction using a Y-shaped microvascular venous anastomotic free flap is labor intensive. Although free flap grafts have been used in many applications, their use for combined microvascular anastomotic therapy remains an unexplored but attractive possibility.

Mechanical and thermal responsive chiral photonic cellulose hydrogels for dynamic anti-counterfeiting and optical skin.

Mater Horiz

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Bio-based Material Science and Technology of Ministry of Education, Northeast Forestry University, Harbin 150040, China.

Dynamic responsive structural colored materials have drawn increased consideration in a wide range of applications, such as colorimetric sensors and high-safety tags. However, the sophisticated interactions among the individual responsive parts restrict the advanced design of multimodal responsive photonic materials. Inspired by stimuli-responsive color change in chameleon skin, a simple and effective photo-crosslinking strategy is proposed to construct hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) based hydrogels with multiple responsive structured colors.

Radiography is a field of medicine inherently intertwined with technology. The dependency on technology is very high for obtaining images in ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although the reduction in radiation dose is not applicable in US and MRI, advancements in technology have made it possible in CT, with ongoing studies aimed at further optimization.

Drosophila CG11700 may not affect male fecundity-lifespan tradeoff as previously reported.

Mol Biol Evol

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Genetic Evolution & Animal Models, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming, Yunnan 650223, China.

Our recent investigations on the function of Drosophila CG11700 and CG32744 (Ubi-p5E) genes using CRISPR/Cas9 deletion technology could not repeat or confirm the results on CG11700 shown in our previous study which was based on P-element excision assay (Zhan et al. 2012). Here by CRISPR/Cas9 editing, we generated mutants of CG32744 with the whole gene body fully deleted from the genome, and truncated mutants of CG11700 with N-terminal 103 aa deleted out of its total 301 aa peptide sequence.
