Monolayers of amino acid-type amphiphiles.

Adv Colloid Interface Sci

November 2023

University of Ulm, D-89081 Ulm, Germany.

The monolayer characteristics of selected N-alkanoyl substituted α-amino acid are studied with the objective to demonstrate the specific effect of the chemical structure of the polar head group which is highlighted with the D- and L-enantiomers of the following selected examples: R-alanine, R-serine, R-threonine, R-allo-threonine, and R-aspartic acid (R = C, C). The thermodynamic effect of the head group variation is studied. Experimental π-A isotherms of the N-tetradecyl-L-alanine monolayers show similar behavior as those of usual amphiphiles.

We studied the surface-enhanced Raman spectra of amino acids -alanine and -serine and their mixture on silver nanoisland films (SNF) immersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution at millimolar amino acid concentrations. It is shown that the spectra from the amino acid solutions differ from the reference spectra for microcrystallites due to the electrostatic orientation of amino acid zwitterions by the metal nanoisland film. Moreover, non-additive peaks are observed in the spectrum of the mixture of amino acids adsorbed on SNF, which means that intermolecular interactions between adsorbed amino acids are very significant.

The purpose of the present study is to access the linkage between dysregulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission, oxidative metabolism, and serine signaling in age-related cognitive decline. In this work, we evaluated the effect of natural aging in rats on the cognitive abilities for hippocampal-dependent tasks. Oxidative metabolism indicators are glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, and cytosolic phospholipase A₂ (PLA₂) activity.

Nanodroplets in inverse miniemulsions provide a colloidal confinement for the crystallization of ammonium phosphomolybdate (APM), influencing the resulting particle size. The effects of the space confinement are investigated by comparing the crystallization of analogous materials both in miniemulsion and in bulk solution. Both routes result in particles with a rhombododecahedral morphology, but the ones produced in miniemulsion have sizes between 40 and 90 nm, 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the ones obtained in bulk solution.

Understanding non-enzymatic aminophospholipid glycation and its inhibition. Polar head features affect the kinetics of Schiff base formation.

Bioorg Med Chem

August 2011

Institut Universitari d'Investigació en Ciències de la Salut (IUNICS), Departament de Química, Universitat de les Illes Balears, Ctra Valldemosa km 7.5, E-07122 Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Non-enzymatic aminophospholipid glycation is an especially important process because it alters the stability of lipid bilayers and interferes with cell function and integrity as a result. However, the kinetic mechanism behind this process has scarcely been studied. As in protein glycation, the process has been suggested to involve the formation of a Schiff base as the initial, rate-determining step.
