Determination of Strain and Stress Field in Screening Test for Concrete Fire Spalling-Passive Restraint Effect.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Centre of Materials and Building Technologies (C-MADE), Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Beira Interior (UBI), 6201-001 Covilhã, Portugal.

The paper examines the impact of passive restraint on fire-induced spalling in concrete, utilizing a concrete mixture to minimize compositional variability. A variety of specimen geometries was prepared, including standard cubes and cylinders for the determination of mechanical properties and slabs of different dimensions for fire spalling tests conducted under controlled conditions. A top-opening Dragon furnace, which applies ISO 834-1 fire curves, was used to evaluate the influence of "cold rim" boundaries, where slab edges were insulated to create thermal restraint.

Article Synopsis
  • The World Health Organization emphasizes that quality healthcare involves providing effective, evidence-based treatments while minimizing harm and resource waste, highlighting the need to address low-value care that fails to benefit patients.
  • The study conducted a thorough review of Dutch clinical guidelines to identify both low-value and high-value nursing care practices across various healthcare sectors, utilizing surveys from over 500 nurses for prioritization.
  • Findings revealed 66 low-value care recommendations, like avoiding unnecessary layers for pressure ulcer prevention, alongside 414 high-value recommendations; the results varied by sector, with certain practices consistently highlighted, such as avoiding physical restraints for patients experiencing delirium.

Objectives: To observe the effect of manual acupuncture stimulation on changes of behavior and hippocampal signaling pathways of AMP-activated kinase (AMPK)/UNC-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) in rats with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression, so as to explore its molecular mechanism underlying improvement of depression.

Methods: Thirty-two male SD rats were randomly divided into normal control, model, acupuncture and medication (fluoxetine) groups, with 8 rats in each group. The depression model was established by using CUMS (fasting, water depredation, restraint, swimming in cold water, crowding, stroboscope stimulation, and tail clipping, each of which was used once a week) for 6 weeks.

Activation of P2X7 Receptor Mediates the Abnormal Ovulation Induced by Chronic Restraint Stress and Chronic Cold Stress.

Biology (Basel)

August 2024

Department of Cell Biology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang 330031, China.

Chronic stress has become a major problem that endangers people's physical and mental health. Studies have shown that chronic stress impairs female reproduction. However, the related mechanism is not fully understood.

Blood gas analysis is a great support to the diagnostic process of critically ill patients. Its correct application to the medicine of dairy cows depends on the availability of specific reference intervals that are still difficult to find in the literature. They may vary according to the type of blood sampled, the animals' age and production stage, and climatic conditions.
