Bacterial over-production of the functionally active human SLC38A2 (SNAT2) exploiting the mistic tag: a cheap and fast tool for testing ligands.

Background: SLC38A2 is a ubiquitously expressed Na-dependent transporter specific for small and medium neutral amino acids. It is involved in human pathologies, such as type II diabetes and cancer. Despite its relevance in human physio-pathology, structure/function relationship studies and identification of ligands with regulatory roles are still in infancy.

Parkinson's disease is a common neurodegenerative disease with a complex physio-pathology. So far, there is no effective medical strategies to prevent the progression of Parkinson's disease. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the progression of Parkinson's disease could provide insights into the formulation of novel preventative or treatment strategies.

AdipoRon negatively regulates proliferation and migration of ARPE-19 human retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Adiponectin is an adipokine playing important roles in metabolic, inflammatory and proliferative processes. At the time of surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, an altered expression of adipokines has been associated with the development of future proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR); this evidence as well as the presence of adiponectin receptors in ocular tissues and cell lines suggests a role of adiponectin in the physio-pathology of ocular conditions. Here, we investigated the effects of AdipoRon, an adiponectin agonist, on ARPE-19, a human retinal pigment epithelial cell line after confirming the expression of AdipoR1, AdipoR2, T-cadherin receptors.

Serotonin: a double-edged sword for the liver?

Surgeon

April 2012

Department of surgery, Laboratory of the Swiss Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Transplantation Center, University Hospital Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Since the discovery of the impact of serotonin in liver regeneration, this molecule has gained considerable attention in liver physio-pathology. Platelet-derived serotonin initiates liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in various rodent models. Serotonin agonism stabilizes the hepatic microcirculation and prevents small-for-size liver graft failure.
