Update in Clinical Science: Autoimmune Hepatitis.

J Hepatol

January 2025

I. Department of Medicine, University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany; European Reference Network on Hepatological Diseases (ERN RARE-LIVER). Electronic address:

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an enigmatic, relatively rare disease with a variable spectrum of presentation whose pathogenesis, diagnosis and management remain a major challenge. Methods. We have performed a review incorporating recent developments in basic science, epidemiology, clinical science, therapeutics, regulatory science and evaluated the challenges associated with the application of translational research and clinical trial design to a condition that is a chameleon in nature, where outcomes range from relatively benign disease through cirrhosis and acute liver failure.

Diabetes is a growing health concern in developing countries, causing considerable mortality rates. While machine learning (ML) approaches have been widely used to improve early detection and treatment, several studies have shown low classification accuracies due to overfitting, underfitting, and data noise. This research employs parallel and sequential ensemble ML approaches paired with feature selection techniques to boost classification accuracy.

Aquatic Invertebrate Antimicrobial Peptides in the Fight Against Aquaculture Pathogens.

Microorganisms

January 2025

CIIMAR-Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research, University of Porto, Terminal de Cruzeiros do Porto de Leixões, Av. General Norton de Matos, s/n, 4450-208 Porto, Portugal.

The intensification of aquaculture has escalated disease outbreaks and overuse of antibiotics, driving the global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) provide a promising alternative due to their rapid, broad-spectrum activity, low AMR risk, and additional bioactivities, including immunomodulatory, anticancer, and antifouling properties. AMPs derived from aquatic invertebrates, particularly marine-derived, are well-suited for aquaculture, offering enhanced stability in high-salinity environments.

Eculizumab proved a strong anti-inflammatory effect in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), rare autoimmune diseases affecting the central nervous system in which aquaporin 4-immunoglobulin G (AQP4-IgG) is the main pathogenic antibody. Pregnancy in NMOSD patients is considered at high-risk for neurological and gynecological outcomes, requiring a careful consideration about treatment maintenance. In this case report, we describe a successful pregnancy, resulting in the birth of a healthy child, in a young woman with AQP4-IgG-seropositive NMOSD who was maintained on eculizumab during all pregnancy.

Solar-Active Carbon Nitride Film Integrated by Free Radical Copolymerization for Photocatalytic Indoor Air Purification.

Small

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environment Engineering, University of Ulsan, Daehakro 93, Namgu, Ulsan, 44610, Republic of Korea.

The current lack of stable, scalable, and efficient coating technology dramatically limits the exploitation of solar-driven graphitic carbon nitride (CN) photocatalysts. Herein, a unique, efficient, and scalable method is reported to immobilize CN powder on various substrates ranging from Fluorine tin oxide (FTO), glass, Plexiglas, Al foil, Ti foil, and Granite stone, to even wood. The film shows an outstanding thickness of 212 µm, which is the highest value ever reported.
